Life in the Real World

12 Things You Will Only Understand If You Moved Away From Home

This new chapter of your life is both exciting and terrifying. Trust me when I say you will feel all the feels at the most inconvenient times. Here are 12 things you can only relate to if you’ve moved away from home.

1. Not being able to sleep in “your” bed.

I speak from personal experience when I say it takes weeks, sometimes moths, to get used to sleeping in a new place. Your bed just doesn’t feel like your bed. It’s truly traumatizing.

2. Missing your mom and calling her every five minutes to catch up.

At home: *out all day, never home, doesn’t text mom*

After moving away: “Hey mom, what are you doing? I just filled up my water bottle.”

3. Feeling like you weren’t able to give your dog a proper goodbye because he can’t understand English.

All you know is you miss him and all he knows is you’re gone. The saddest love story there ever was. Maybe one day you can reunite. Until then, here’s to hugging your plush cut out and crying over pictures of the two of you together. Break out the ice cream girlfriend because this is honestly worse than a break-up.

4. Getting sick and hoping you just die from it already because you have no one to take care of you.

Seriously, the worst. Get your flu shot, drink your orange juice, and do everything you can to avoid the germs. Bring on the lotion infused tissues and the Gossip Girl Netflix marathons until you have fully recovered.

5. Having to learn how to cook and subsequently realizing how expensive ordering pizza every night is.

It’s all fun and games until you are literally starving and can’t possibly order anymore takeout. Ramen, where you at? My advice, always have microwaveable meals on hand.

6. Googling YouTube tutorials every time you don’t know how to do something.

How to use a can opener? Google. How to change a light bulb? Google. What to do when your car breaks down? Google. Seriously, Google saves lives. Especially incompetent young adult lives like our own.

7. Getting lost on your way to school or work every day because it’s a new town and you struggle with directions.

Hey, it’s okay. It happens to the best of us. New places just take a little bit longer to get used to and that’s okay! Just make sure you have your phone charged and ready to go when you get in a pinch.

8. Struggling to go out and meet new people because your new home is cozy and the outside world is scary.

Seriously, why would I leave the comfort of my sweatpants to have to deal with tight jeans and sweaty strangers all night? No thank you.

9. Using dating apps to try and make friends.

Finally getting the energy and courage to go out and meet people but knowing deep down that it’s just going to be some creepy guy who is looking for a one night stand. Living in the 21st century is a bummer sometimes.

10. Only being with your family on holidays.

Not to mention, having to use vacation days to see them. What kind of tomfoolery is this?Oh yeah, it’s called “adulting.”

11. Not being yelled at when you leave clothes everywhere.

Everybody has that one chair, appropriately deemed “the clothes chair” where everything just gets dumped when you don’t want to put it away. Now that you’re out on your own house, that clothes chair can be anything. Yes, that includes the floor. My inner laziness is smiling as I type this.

12. Realizing that you are a successful human being who is just trying to live her best life.

In all seriousness, moving away from home is great. It really teaches you a lot about yourself. You have a lot of opportunities to mess up and learn from these mistakes. Don’t take them for granted.

If you don’t experience at least 10 of these have you really moved away from home or struggled with young adulthood? I think not but maybe you just have your life together a little bit more than the rest of us. If that’s the case, then go you! If not, we’re all right there with you so try not to stress too hard.
