10 Things You Need To Pack If You Are Studying Abroad In Europe

Get out a pen and paper because there are so many things that you will need to pack if you’re studying abroad in Europe! I am currently studying abroad in Florence, Italy, and it is one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life! Packing for nine months in two suitcases was surely a challenge. Now, of course there’s many things you can buy in Europe that you can also get in the United States, but there are some items you don’t want to forget before you leave for your semester or year abroad. Below, I’ve compiled a study abroad packing list. Take a look and take note of these 10 things you need to pack if you are studying abroad in Europe!

1. Some Handy Ibuprofen

Ibuprofen is hard to find in Europe at the pharmacies. Save yourself the hassle and buy a big bottle on Amazon to keep in case you need to alleviate those awful period cramps or an annoying headache.

2. An Adapter Pack Will Save Your Life

You can buy adapters in Europe, but it’s smart to have one with you as you travel to Europe. You never know where you are going to get stuck, and being able to charge a dead phone is a big plus! If you can, buy a small adapter pack that you can use in different countries/continents. They aren’t too expensive. These are probably the most important on the study abroad packing list, because without them you won’t be able to use many things you normally would use in the US.

3. You Will Crave Peanut Butter More Than You Think

You’re not going to find a jar of Jiff or Skippy’s in Europe, so if you’re a peanut butter lover like me, add that to your packing list. Get yourself a big 64 ounce jar so it will last a while.

4. A Durable Backpack With Lots Of Room

Forget having a Coach bag to put under your seat. You need to use a backpack for all your future abroad adventures. You’ll be surprised how much stuff you can fit in one for a weekend getaway.

5. Rain Boots Are A Must

It’s cold and rainy during the winter in Europe. Rain boots are big and bulky, but they’re an essential for European winters. Might as well add some cozy socks you can pack right in the rain boots. Leave your LL Bean boots and Uggs at home!

6. A Rain Jacket Is Also A Must

A rain jacket is also a smart item to pack under a few sweaters. Nothing is worse than being soaked in the cold rain!

7. A Quality Camera For Stellar Pics

You should definitely invest in a nice camera for your travels. Polaroids are fun and iPhones do the job, but think about buying a Nikon or Canon. Let’s be honest though, your eyes are the best at capturing moments.

8. A Good Pair Of Sneakers

You’re going to do a lot of walking in Europe. Comfortable walking (and running) shoes are a must!

9. You Will Miss Your Cheez-its

If you love Cheez-its, you are going to experience separation anxiety. Pack a box and wait to open it until midterms week.

10. A Crossbody Bag

A small crossbody bag that only holds money, keys, and your phone is what you need for a night out or an afternoon/evening stroll. A tote and backpack are too big for a small outing.

So there’s your study abroad travel guide! I hope you make it out there, and don’t forget to have fun!
