10 Things You Can’t Stand That People Do On Social Media
I think we love social media. We really do. It’s an epidemic and a huge achievement of human-kind. Our hyper-connected time lines are always filled with humor, crazy going ons, real life facts, fake news, family events, and spiritual quotes. But occasionally, when I venture forth onto the timelines of someone else, or into an ongoing comment feed, I see some content that makes me just want rage quit on social media and rethink the chances of positive change in the world. OK maybe that’s going a bit far. But really, I hate to go all Miss America 1900’s Beauty Pageant I Wish For World Peace I’m Depressed Because This Ain’t A Perfect World on ya’ll, but can’t we all just get along? …Here’s 10 things that people do on Social Media that make some of us? feel this way.
Arguments For A Cause That Don’t Resolve The Cause
You ever encounter a feed on Social Media where someone posts something awful that occurred or is occurring right now, and asks for support; and users jump in the comments adding all kinds of negativity on top of the issue at hand? I can’t stand when people fight for a cause and they’re not even helping the issue. Do you ever feel that way? Like instead of adding more drama how about we actually try to resolve something for once, through actual observation, background checking, and hypothesizing. Like really. I think we could all use another lesson on how to apply the Scientific Method in everyday life.
Discriminating Polls
Time and time again memes are created asking questions that provoke discriminating and sexist opinions to be shared. I’m not talking about regular good humor where there’s no good answer to choose from. I mean legit conversations to get people talking about shit we need to let go of. Example meme: “What’s More Important, A Woman That Can Cook Or Clean?” I hate to repeat, but, why does it have to be a woman? What if I, as a woman, prefer to do neither, and would rather have a man that does that stuff? What if I’d like to take turns so I don’t have to do it all? Believe it or not, these aren’t the types of comments that follow a post like this. They’re more like “Cook! Cuz if that bitch can’t clean I’m out,” or “Clean, because I can’t stand a nasty woman.” Yeah, everyone’s having fun and all, but now 28k people are proving that they’re sexist in regards to the socially designated responsibilities of women…This is something I can’t stand that people do on Social Media.
Hate Speech For Sale
I know we’re protected by the first Amendment, but really we all know that hate speech is a crime right? Another thing I can’t stand that people do on Social Media is spew harmful trash talk like it’s a commodity for likes. It’s only my opinion, but there’s a real ethics crisis going on in the world right now and this is something I can’t stand that people do on Social Media.
Hate Reporting
What’s up with people reporting content just because they’re not interested in what you post? This is totally annoying. Like some don’t seem to realize that reporting is a serious accusation that get’s accounts suspended and such, just because of a 2 second form you fill out saying the content was inapplicable to you. **Eye Roll**
Why Aren’t You Liking
OK. To step out of the serious civility talk and get more into Social Media itself (although this is still kind of an ethics issue). What’s with the not liking? Did you know that if we all liked each others content, everyone would have the most likes? Lol. OK no but really. I like a lot of content on Social Media and don’t receive a fraction of that many likes. That’s my only complaint here. Just another thing I can’t stand about social media. No love.
Fake News Spam
There’s always some crazy story being spread through the messages on certain Social Media platforms. Acts of violence, police brutality. Of course there are real stories with these issues, but some of the ones on Social Media are completely staged. You can tell by the choreography of the assaults and the camera angles. What I can’t stand about it, is that this adds to the problems already out there; causing people to go nuts and feel aggression. It’s horrible, it really is. But there’s hardly any control on the content that people are allowed to share on the internet…Another story for another day.
Regular Spam
This type of spam is different from the Fake News Spam in that it doesn’t really rile any one up. Instead it’s just plain annoying. Feeds are going all day and when you rewind back the hands of time to see what you’ve missed, finding that half of it is ad spam is just too much.
Developers Constantly Changing Privacy Policies
If you’re like me, you read the entire policy of every site or social media platform you intend to use. I just need to hear that I’m signing my soul over to the devil before I do it. Because I know that’s what’s happening when we agree. So every time the policy changes I have to read it all again and adjust my settings all over again. And they’re really quite pointless because whatever they’ve updated, they’re probably still telling you that they’re selling all your preferences to 3rd, 4th, and 5th parties…Really can’t stand those Social Media developers sometimes.
The Fake Accounters
Anyone ever notice whether or not they’re receiving friend requests from people that are already on your list? This is really annoying. Who are these people? And why are they allowed to create duplicate accounts of those who are already on Social Media? Come on! That’s just a waste of internet space.
Being A Creep
Ever have people try to follow you on Social Media who have no entire profile. They’ve got one single photo, that doesn’t even show you who they are, and they’re liking and commenting on your feeds? That’s creepy! I don’t care what anyone says, these are random weirdos who create profiles for the sheer sake of stalking. And people are allowed to do this on Social Media. There’s no control. And I can’t stand it!
