8 Things You Can Do To Spark Your Creativity

Oftentimes, especially during the winter, it can be easy to feel your creative spark waiver a bit. Once you’re stuck in a rut like that, it’s really hard to get out of it and feel imaginative again. However, there a lot of ways to inspire creativity within yourself again when you’re feeling lost! Here are eight things you can try in order to get that spark going again.

1. Create A Vision Board

Vision boards are a super fun and easy way to get your creative juices flowing. While these are often made to visualize goals for a new year or new period of life, you can make them for just about anything! Better yet, make it an activity that you do with friends and turn it into a night of group creativity.

If you’re not sure where to start, Pinterest is a great place for everything that has to do with creativity. There are so many inspiring images, quotes, and you can build boards and collages from the images on there. You can also take your ideas to paper and make a traditional vision board by cutting out pictures from magazines or printing ones to create an actual board full of ideas.

Again, this board could be a vision for any big idea; perhaps you’re not feeling creative with your style anymore, and you want to mix up your fashion a bit. A vision board is a great way to gather ideas for clothing pieces you want to wear and outfits you want to try. This will definitely spark your creativity and make you feel inspired to continue moving forward!

2. Listen To Music

Something that inspires a lot of people is listening to music; it can help you get out of your own head and feel your creativity grow. Listening to new music that is unfamiliar to you is especially helpful, rather than shuffling the same playlist you’ve had for years. It doesn’t help to stick to routine or stay with the things you know; you need to try new things, and that includes new music.

Try asking your friends for a bunch of song or album recommendations and make a playlist of everyone’s suggestions. This will provide you with new music to try, and hopefully make you feel more artistic yourself.

3. Get Outside

Sometimes just leaving your room and going out to experience the world can spark new ideas and give you inspiration. Try putting away your phone or other devices for a while and just take a walk around your neighborhood. Doing another outdoor activity is great, too, but if a quick walk is all you can do, that’s perfectly fine!

All it takes is some movement, a change of scenery, and some beautiful nature to trigger that creative spirit again! Let the world around you inspire you to create and try new things that you might not have thought of while sitting at home.

4. Draw And Journal

I often find myself stuck when I need to write and at a loss for ideas. Sometimes, just writing down random thoughts and words in a journal is the best thing I can do to get my creativity flowing.

Don’t limit yourself, and just grab a notebook to draw or journal whatever comes to mind. You don’t have to be a great writer or artist to this, so just let loose and don’t worry about how your sketches look or about how your writing sounds! This is just an exercise to get your mind working and feeling imaginative.

5. Rearrange Your Space

If you’ve had all the furniture in your home or room in the same place for a long time, you can begin to feel stuck in your own space. Just feeling like the environment around you is dull can really dull your creativity. To combat this, try rearranging, reorganizing, or redecorating your space.

For example, if you typically do a lot of creative thinking in your bedroom, try switching up where you bed is. By simply moving it to a new spot, or by moving your desk or other furniture around, you can feel like you’re mentally changing your environment. This will help spark more creativity when you’re in your “new” space.

6. Be Social

Whether you’re more of an introvert or an extrovert, being around other people can really help you gain some more creativity. Sitting alone in your room might be a good way to generate artistic ideas some of the time, but you can’t be truly creative unless you’re connecting with other people, too.

It’s helpful to get out of your head and surround yourself with people who inspire and encourage you. By spending time with other creatives, you’ll be sure to have some new ideas of your own!

7. Go Back In Time

No, this doesn’t mean you should invent a time machine and travel back in time. Rather, try to remember what you were passionate about as a child; the things that brought you joy as a kid are likely things that will be fun to revisit and do with a fresh perspective.

Sometimes, just going back to old hobbies can help you feel creatively rejuvenated in a lot of ways. For instance, if you loved coloring when you were a kid, grab a coloring book and fill in those lines! It might seem silly and childish, but there are some great adult coloring books out there, and it can just be a fun activity to refresh your mind and soul.

8. Daydream

Allow your mind to wander to every place it wants to go; letting your daydreams run wild will often bring you new and interesting ideas. However, it can be hard to daydream if you’re feeling unimaginative or if you’re particularly busy with other things. Take some time to just think and imagine anything your brain wants to cook up.

I find that the shower is a great place to daydream, as well as while you’re falling asleep at night. Just use the spare moments you have to let your imagination take control and allow yourself to daydream about endless possibilities. You’re sure to feel that creative spark return when you let your mind work at its full potential!
