Are you looking for a sense of community this year at your college or university? Look no further because Greek Life has you covered! Enrolling in a new college or university can be terrifying. Coming straight from high school especially, college can be hard to figure out. One of the easiest ways to make new friends is to join Greek Life! There are countless sororities and fraternities that are recruiting each year who are just dying to meet you and the first step to joining them is getting information on your university’s Rush Week! Many of these friendships go on to last a lifetime because of the sacred bond that Greek Life creates. So why wait? Here are 5 ways that YOU can prepare for your school’s rush week!
There are countless ways to start feeling more confident about yourself. By college age, you’ve probably figured out what works best for you in your less confident moments. These ways can include self-love mantras in the mirror or styling your hair the same way you did for prom. Whatever it may be that works for you, it is vital that you raise your confidence before rush week! Going to meet all the different sororities and fraternities can be overwhelming – so you’ll want to be feeling the least anxious that you possibly can when you’re beginning your week.
We all know that the schedule of a college student is never forgiving. However, one way you can make sure that you are totally prepared for rush week is by catching up as much work as you possibly can before you get started on recruitment. Whether “work” for you means classwork, tests, a job, or chores, you’ll want to get it all out of the way prior to beginning the recruitment process. Rush week can be extremely time consuming, and it will probably be on your mind quite a bit. By catching up on anything else you would have to do this week, you will be able to relax that part of your mind and focus on your entrance into Greek Life.
This topic is obviously a little easier said than done, so take it with a grain of salt. If you find yourself mid rush week needing to pause your focus on the recruitment process – don’t beat yourself up! College students are almost always incredibly busy. If before rush week you’re not as caught up as you want to be – stay calm! Rework your schedule for the rest of the week so that you make sure you are giving yourself enough time to complete everything and still be able to follow through with recruitment.
Your taste in fashion isn’t going to be to reason you make or break a deal with a sorority or fraternity, but it is a chance to make a great first impression! What better way to display yourself expression rather than in an outfit? Start to flip through your closet and come up with some new ideas. Pull out all your favorite jewelry and get to work! Not only is this a great way to make sure you are expressing yourself to your fullest potential, but your nerves will also settle since you will be one step closer to being ready for rush week!Typically, when I choose outfits in advance, I like to check the dress guidelines. No one is telling you what to wear, but you may want to check with friends to make sure you’re not going too dressy or too casual. (If you’ve got your eyes on a certain chapter and you want them to notice you – look into what they wear! Don’t copy and paste an outfit from their Instagram but use their favorite colors or styles to spice up your average look and catch their eye!) Iron your shirts, choose your shoes and then lay the outfits out somewhere you’ll be able to grab them and go throughout the week. Laying out your outfits will make the mornings of Rush Week much less stressful.
You are bound to start looking at the Instagram accounts of other people involved in Greek Life at your school. We just recommended that you take some outfit inspiration from them – so, why not reach out? Follow a couple of them on social medias and send a quick message their way introducing yourself and letting them know that you’re interested in joining Greek Life! They are likely to be able to answer any questions you might have about Rush Week or Greek Life in general. Typically, they’re happy to answer any questions you have! Greek Life is all about sisterhood / brotherhood and philanthropy. So don’t worry about “bothering” anyone or sounding silly because the foundation of these groups is to help people out.Not only will reaching out to people already involved in Greek Life answer some of your questions with real opinions and ease your nerves, but it’s also a great opportunity to make new friends throughout the process. Who’s to say you have to stop there? You’re bound to find a couple of people on social media or on campus that are in the same exact boat as you. Ask the new people that you’re likely meeting every day on campus if they’ve thought about participating in Rush Week. If they have, you just gained one more friend to take with you through the process! Getting a social group going and having a someone that you can express your nervousness to will be extremely beneficial in getting you through Rush Week.
Although you’re not exactly packing for a trip, you’ll definitely want to pack your essentials in advance so you’re not scrambling for things on your way out the door. Pack your bag with things you’ll need for long, tiring days. Obviously, you’ll need things like your cell phone and maybe a portable charger, but some things you wouldn’t think of might slip your mind. You’ll want to make sure you’ve packed a snack or two for the day and a water bottle that you can sip throughout the day. Make sure you’ve packed a couple of pens and a notepad or journal, too! You never know what you might learn about the different sororities or fraternities, and you’ll want to make sure you’re taking notes so that you choose the right house for you!
