7 Things To Keep In Mind After Graduating From University

Graduating from university comes with a lot of trials and challenges for young adults. Here are some of the things to remember after graduation!

University life is great but all students dream of the day when they will be given their diplomas and pronounced actual graduates of so and so. However, although recent grads can take a sigh of relief after finishing uni, there are several important things to keep in mind after graduating from university.

And with that being said, here they are…

1. The Reality Of Living Back At Home

Finishing university means that you will inevitably have to return back home and thus leave all the comforts of freedom and privacy at your student halls/ flats! This will definitely take some time to get use to as 3 years is a lot of time for you to develop your own little lifestyle! All I am saying is be prepared for the constant nagging from your parents to do some chores and you having no personal space of your own for some time now! Definitely remember this after graduating from University!

2. Less Contact With Your Uni Friends

There is no doubt that you build many relationships at university- like tutors, flat mates and most importantly… friends! These are the people who have helped you to survive uni life when you first arrived as a fearful fresher and stood proudly next to you as you waited excitedly to get your diplomas! However, most of these friends might be from other parts of the world as universities are international institutions- and so you should keep in mind that you will lose contact with or hear less from your uni friends as they move back to their home countries/ towns. This is quite sad but also just a part of life. Jus remember that there is nothing stopping you from keeping in contact with them on social media or buying a plane ticket and seeing them face to face for an epic reunion! 😉 This is something to keep in mind after graduating from University.

3. No More Student Finance!

Student finance is a student’s Holy Grail! As an eighteen year old who is moving away from home for the first time, money is both a problem and an absolute necessity! With that being said, the government kindly allows students to claim student finance which will inevitably cover most/ if not all the costs of being a student; accommodation fees, food, travel etc… It is vital to keep in mind that after you finish uni you are no longer a student anymore… meaning that all the free income from SF stops. This means you have to be a bit more conscious with how you spend your money whilst you try to find a job. This is hard at first as you have become use to all the ‘free money’ from the government. But as they say “all good things have to come to an end!” This is just another upsetting thing to come to terms with as you finish university! :/

4. A Lack Of  Routine

We all know that it is extremely hard to get into the ’back to school’ spirit after the summer holidays, but this is a problem recent graduates no longer have to face as academic teaching  for them is officially over for good! Yes that only means one thing- constantly forgetting what day of the week it is! It will definitely take some time to adjust to the fact that you no longer have to be at a lecture/ seminar or that you have to wake up at 9 to do some work in general! Remembering that you have nowhere to be as you graduate is something to keep in mind for sure!

5. A Strange Desire To Go Back To School!

As a high schooler you cannot wait to quit school for good! However when your wish is officially granted after you graduate from uni you alternatively become really sad and nostalgic about your days as a student. This feeling makes you really emotional about everything you experienced as a student like reluctantly waking up to go to class or stressing out for a major presentation that you had to deliver in a seminar! These feelings will for sure come flooding into you as you finish uni, making them this point something every recent grad can and will relate to!

6. Having To Become An Actual Adult 🙁

This point is a given! We all know that the somewhat final stage of life as a child is undertaken whilst you are in university- even though you are technically an adult at this point! But the world actually treats you like a fully-fledged adult when you leave uni and start to do more things that are- as they say, highly ‘adulting’! For instance, at this point you have to start looking for an actual full time job and eventually find your own place to leave, whilst simultaneously learning how to do absolutely everything by yourself without the help of your parents and your university! This will inevitably be a daunting experience but it is the next stage of your life which you have to embrace fully in order to get it right! This is something you want to remember after graduating from University.

7. Postitvity, Determination and Patience x

Out of all the things you need to remember as a recent graduate, the most important thing to ingrain within your minds is to stay positive, determined and patient as you go on the hunt to find a job! It should come as no surprise that life after uni will be hard and difficult to adjust to, but it is important to be positive as you figure out what you are going to do with your life! Getting to where you want to be in life will take some time and you will face many rejections along the way, but remember it is how you handle and deal with it that counts the most! Positivity, determination and patience will create a recipe to success, just you wait and see! X Definitely keep this in mind after graduating from University.
