10 Things To Get Rid Of When Moving In With Your Partner

Your significant other is great, but their stuff isn’t. Moving in together is a big step, but before you take it, you should probably consider downsizing your personal assets. Not everything we own is precious keepsakes. So here is a list of the top 10 things to get rid of when moving in with your partner!

1. Exercise Equipment

I know, that infomercial you watched at 6am was very convincing and you were totally going to use the bo-flex to get in shape for your high school reunion. But we both know that all it really does is take up space, a lot of space.  Exercise equipment is number one on the list of things to get rid of.

By ditching the unneeded shake weights and yoga mats you are making room for each other and cleaning up space. Besides, I’m sure you will find another way to burn off those extra calories with a different aerobic exercise!

2. Nerdy Memorabilia

Look, I’m sure his comic book collection is extensive and impressive. However, if you’re not going to read them and he has already read them it might be time for the donation bin. These are things to get rid of.

Get rid of comic books, movie posters, action figures, and even your framed photo of Zac Efron. You don’t need those childish distractions anymore, you have each other.

I would probably just put the framed photo of Zac Efron in storage though, you never know.

3. Anything That Belonged to Your Ex

Keepsakes from a past relationship are poison to your current one. Sometimes it can be hard to let go of the past and fully move on. Eventually, we need to accept that the past is in the past and holding onto that t-shirt isn’t going to change that.

You may even be one of those peoples that has an ‘ex-box,’ a small shoebox filled with mementos of a past relationship that you keep under your bed. If you are, get rid of it.

4. Old Clothes

Wait why are you holding onto your grade 8 grad dress? Yeah, it’s pretty but it also takes up a lot of space in the closet.  A closet that you know has to share with a whole other person.

So pull a Marie Kondo and go through your entire wardrobe, throw out anything you haven’t worn in the past year, have holes in it, or just take up a lot of space.

5. DVD’S, CD’S, and VHS’S

I own the entire Parks and Rec series on a collection of DVDs. When I was younger and living at home it was great to have them accessible. But once you live with someone else, and split the Netflix bill, it will seem silly to have these dated pieces of entertainment taking up space.

You can download mostly everything off of the internet anyways. So say goodbye to those bonus features and hello to more space. This rule also works for books, if you’re not going to read it again, say goodbye.

6. Granny Panties

Living together is going to present new challenges in your relationship. You’ll be in each other’s space, one of you will be messier than the other and all sense privacy is gone. This is going to make it challenging to keep the flame alive.

Don’t let granny panties stand in the way of hot make-up sex. I’m not saying get rid of these, but maybe keep them in the back of the closet.

7. Body Pillows

Say hello to your new body pillow, otherwise known as your new sleeping buddy. Having extra pillows is fine, but one long pillow in the center of the bed that only one person can use is a waste.

Cuddle up with your special someone instead and forget about the sack of feathers. Body pillows or any stuffed animals are an obvious item on the list of things to get rid of.

8. Framed Photos

This might sound weird, but trust me on this one. I’m not in any way suggesting you throw out that framed photo you have of you and your sorority sisters. It is super cute and your hair looks great in it. I am suggesting that you pop that photo out and put it into a photo album.

By doing this you are clearing up wall space for your significant other and allowing room for new photos of the two of you to be hung up.

9. Intimate Goods…

So you were single for a while before meeting the love of your life, so you invested in some X-rated content and or supplies… That is a perfectly normal thing to do and do not be embarrassed about it.

However, if you have a bit of a collection going on maybe these are things to get rid of.

10. Old Makeup

I have a tube of lip gloss that is five years old sitting under my sink right now. Ew! Why don’t I throw it away? Because I might need that exact shade one day. But this is definitely on the list of things to get rid of.

Don’t tell yourself lies like this. Clean out your bathroom just like you did your closet. Out with the old and in with the new.

When you move in together you’re both going have to compromise on a lot of stuff. They may not love your flamingo statue and you for sure won’t like all their comics. But if you love each other, I’m sure you can make it work.
