25 Things To Do When You’re Bored In Your 20s
Listing things to do when you’re bored is the easy part, but finding something that you truly enjoy can be difficult. In the world we live in today there are many things to do when you’re bored but we can’t always think of anything. Here is a list of twenty-five things to do when you’re bored.
1. Read A Book
What is more fun than getting lost in another world? Reading is at the top of my list of things to do when you’re bored. By picking up a book the possibilities are endless. Learning should never stop, and by reading you are always learning. Reading has and will always be a favorite pastime for myself because of all the worlds I can visit by simply reading pages from a book. You could even pick up books from your local library to study new hobbies or even just further your understanding of a topic.
2. Start A Book Series
If you are like me, one book is never enough. Therefore, I love to find a great book series that I can dive into. I prefer book series to just one book because I can get lost in another world for longer. Swing by your library and ask the librarian for a recommendation, or reach out to friends and see what they like. This will allow for new discussions while you are hanging out, as well as new opportunities for growth in new words and understanding.
3. Start A New Hobby
There are a large number of hobbies that you can explore when you’re trying to find things to do when you’re bored. You still have your whole life ahead of you therefore it can be easy to explore more than one hobby. If you like to write start a blog or research on how to make money writing. If your a builder go to your local hobby store and buy yourself the car model kits or some clay and build away. If your a collector then figure out what items you’d love to collect and start building your collections. The possibilities are endless when starting a new hobby.
4. Learn A New Craft
Finding things to do when you’re bored does not have to be complicated. This idea coincides with starting a new hobby, but instead, this is something that allows you to work on small projects at a time. Many people even make money online and at small shops by making crafts and selling them to buyers. Explore what you are good at and go for it. Design new ways to use mason jars or how to reuse everyday objects. You could learn how to make candles or even babydolls that you could donate to children in need.
5. Go For A Drive To The Next Town
Another thing to do when you’re bored is to explore someplace new. Just venturing to the town next to you can make for a great getaway for a day. Each week choose a new town to explore and truly explore it. Check out local dinners and shops, visit museums or any free shows that may be going on. Visit any parks or monuments while your there. This is a great way to learn about history as well as allowing you to have fresh settings.
6. Go On A Mini Vacation
When we think of vacation we often think of the lavish expenses that come along with it. This does not have to be the case. You can make a weekend getaway in your state fairly cheap by just researching your area. Rent a cabin for a few days with some friends or family. Splitting the cost will make the vacation more idea for your pockets. Do a staycation and hold a movie marathon with a variety of treats. Take a trip to the closest amusement part and face your fears as you ride the coasters. A vacation does not have to be extravagant for you to have fun.
7. Write A Bucket List Of New Restaurants to Try
While there are many things to do when you’re bored, writing out a bucket list of restaurants to try is a favorite of mine. Many cities have small restaurants that hold unique and fun experiences. Research these gems through an internet search or by asking those around you for a recommendation. Write down your top ten to try and each week or month, whatever timeline fits your schedule go and try them. You may just find a new favorite restaurant. After visiting local restaurants, explore further by adding places further from your city to try. After you try each one, write out a paragraph describing your experience and thoughts. If your bucket list is shared with a special someone or a special group, make sure you include and special memories in your paragraph. You could even start a scrapbook to capture all of your experiences.
8. Write A Bucket List To Achieve
If restaurants don’t sound like a great idea for a bucket list to give you ideas of things to do when you’re bored, then write a life bucket list. This is for open interpretation because for each person the bucket list will differ greatly. On the bucket list maybe someone wants their first tattoo, or to dye their hair a crazy color just once. For others is may focus more on the future such as buy a house and graduate college to maybe even vacation to their dream destination. Whatever you wish to accomplish write it down and work towards checking each one off by a certain time. I have done two bucket lists at once. One containing more serious goals that pertain to my future goals to reach by a certain age. My second one contained ideas that I wanted to do for that year, some were serious such as find an internship, others were fun such as ride a horse. The options are as endless as your desires.
9. Find A New T.V. Series
Another favorite pastime on my list of things to do when you’re bored is to find a t.v. series you enjoy. This is something that will give you something to look forward to each week as you impatiently wait for the next episode. I do not suggest binge-watching because then you have nothing to look forward to next week. I also don’t condone only watching t.v because there is so much life to be lived outside of electronics. If you have a close friend or relative that likes the show make a night out of it by cooking dinner, or indulge and order out. Watch the show together which will also allow for discussions about the show and what may come.
10. Join A Book Club
If you love to read but want to have adult interaction then join a book club. Or even better start your own with close friends or family members to make it better. Hold weekly meetings where you have snacks or even dinner and discuss the book and each person takes turns hosting. This is great for multiple reasons including giving you something weekly to look forward to, fun time with others, and a new hobby.
11. Join A Club For A New Hobby
If reading isn’t your thing no worries, there are plenty of other clubs and groups that you may find you’d like to be apart of. Find an adult chess team or sports team if you are more athletic than you are a bookworm. Find somewhere to blow glass or paint. There are many hobbies that you can venture to find and participate in.
12. Write A Book
Have an idea for a book, put it to paper or the screen. Writing your own book does not have to be a complex ordeal. Even if you don’t want to publish it, it is still something you could work on continuously. If you’d like to publish then there are many routes you can take to publish including self-publishing. There are many genres of books so the possibilities are endless.
13. Learn To Draw
Let us be honest, some of us are just born with natural gifts such as drawing. While others we can’t even draw a straight line. No matter where your skill levels are when it comes to drawing, its never too late to learn. There are many books, Youtube videos, and websites that can help teach you the step by step how to draw. Grab some supplies from your local craft store and have fun with it. Maybe even make a date night with a significant other or friends.
14. Take A Class
If you are still trying to find things to do when you’re bored, why not take a class and learn something new. The class can be for any reason whether it’s an art class or maybe even a history class. Want to be physically active try yoga or boxing, learn photography or how to cook. Find something you find to be engaging and go for it. Find multiple classes and go to them all. The only thing you’re going to do by going is possible to find new friends and new interests.
15. Volunteer At The Zoo Or Animal Shelter
Zoos and shelters are usually always open to volunteers coming to help with the animals. Just like humans, animals need to feel loved and be taken care of as well. If your low on things to do when your bored what better idea than to love on animals. Contact your local zoo or shelter and speak to someone about volunteer opportunities.
16. Find An Internship
Internships can be fun and open many opportunities for you in your career as well as overall life. Finding an internship can be a valuable idea when looking for things to do when you’re bored. In addition to gaining experience, some internships also offer paid positions.
17. Volunteer At Your Local Homeless Shelter
Like the idea about volunteering at your local animal shelter, you can find opportunities to help your community by volunteering your time at a homeless shelter. Many of these individuals had just fallen on hard times and would enjoy someone to talk to. If being in the shelter isn’t your thing, then there are many other ways in which you can help and provide services. You could easily make small packages containing items that the homeless would need. This can include socks, some non-perishable foods, gloves, blankets and more.
18. Volunteer At Your Local Hospital Or Nursing Home
Many hospitals and nursing homes look for volunteers to help patients in a variety of ways. Many living in nursing homes are just in need of someone who cares and is willing to listen to them tell tales of their younger years. Hospitals are usually low on staff so having someone yo volunteer to help can make a monumental difference in their lives as well as the patients. Again if this isn’t your forte you could make gift bags like the homeless idea. For children, you could donate toys, blankets, stuffed animals or games to help the children feel better. Nursing home patients love some of the same things as well as flowers and puzzles to pass their time.
19. Join a Big Brothers/Sisters Organization
Much of our youth are being influenced by negative factors in our culture. Why not bring some positivity into the world by becoming a big brother/sister. You can find these programs by reaching out to your community and asking around. Some schools, libraries, and hospitals offer these programs. You could also reach out to local foster homes and see if there is any need for a positive program as well. If you have siblings then you probably understand the huge role that siblings have on each other. Becoming that positive role model for an impressionable you could make a life-changing experience for another.
20. Begin a Weekly Tradition With Friends Or Family
Looking for things to do when you’re bored does not have to involve volunteering, working or learning if you already have enough of that in your life. Simply planning a game night with friends and family can start a new tradition that can bring fun into your life. Have weekly game nights or tournaments where you all meet up at a place of residence or even a restaurant. Have fun playing charades, Monopoly which will take at least a month of weekly meet-ups to complete, hold a paint session or a mixture of everything. The important idea is to begin a new tradition that everyone will enjoy and look forward too.
21. Plan Your Dream Vacation And Go
We all have that one destination in our hearts that we long to visit. Why not plan your dream vacation and go. Start by researching the area and what you would enjoy doing while you were there. Make sure you are keeping a list of pricing to go along with your ideas. Come up with an estimated cost and start saving. Begin doing odd jobs to save up money faster. Set a time frame that you’d like to achieve to make this dream more reasonable in achieving. When the time comes, go and enjoy your dream vacation.
22. Learn To Sew
Growing up the way I was raised it boggles my mind that many do not know how to sew a simple button back onto their shirt. Therefore I have listed this for a few reasons. I believe knowing how to sew is a life necessity. Sewing your own clothes can save you money, and knowing how to sew well could also bring in some money. For this reason, I believe learning to sew is a great thing to do when you’re bored. After you have mastered basic hand sewing, move on to learning a sewing machine.
23. Community Service
Another great idea for things to do when you’re bored is to get involved in community service. There is plenty of organization that is non-profit that needs help in executing its plan to make the world a better place. This may include trash clean-up, building houses and more. Ask around your community for ways you can get involved or do an internet search for organizations near you.
24. Go On A Cruise
This is probably one of the most costly ideas of things to do when you’re bored, but why not list it. Begin by researching cruise lines, as well as their destinations. Choose the one that fits you the best and start planning. Save money by downsizing expenses and doing odd jobs. I guarantee you this will be the best experience and you will not be looking for things to do when you’re bored.
25. Chase Your Dreams
At the end of the day when you are at a loss on things to do when you’re bored, chase your dreams. This is one idea you should never get bored with. No matter how big or small your dreams maybe go after them, make the plans, set goals, and go for it. Life is too short to not live your best life.
