Being bored at home is honestly one of the worst things to be. When you have nothing to do, it can feel like time crawls to a numbing halt. Not to mention that you can feel guilty when you eat up time that you could be using to do something productive. So, to help decrease those feelings, we’ve created a list of ten things that you can do when you’re bored at home!
In this time in history, we are more connected to each other now than we ever have been before. This might seem like such a simple and underrated thing to do. They’re your friends. Worse comes to worst is they don’t respond to you in time, or they leave you on read. It’s no big deal. We all do it. But why don’t we reach out to each other more? Even just a quick hello or “how are you” can spark a conversation that will last for hours on end and stop you from being bored at home within a few moments. So what are you waiting for? Pick up your phone and say hi to a few people who have gone under the radar.
I don’t know about you, but I have a guilty conscious when it comes to books and reading. I can never really seem to finish a book from start to finish. As someone who loves to read, you would think it would be the opposite case and that I would be glued to the pages nearby a window sill like the bookworm that I am, but no, unfinished books keep accumulating. So use this time to finish reading one of those books. It doesn’t have to be a physical copy, finish reading something. Not only will it take up time in your bored at home day, but it will also be enriching for you.
It seems like such an overlooked thing when you say it, but listening to music can seriously help pass the time way more than you would expect when you’re stuck bored at home. Hell, you could even curate a few music playlists for yourself to prep for the next time you’re stuck on the road or need to go for a long drive. Besides, who doesn’t like to have a little dance party in your living room when no one is watching? So pull out your headphones and grab your speakers, turn up the volume, and jam out to your heart’s content.
This might seem a little odd, but I know this is a universal occurrence: Google something, anything. The first thing that pops into your head, be it sea turtles in the history of backset ball, type it into your search bar and start watching youtube videos. Just follow down that rabbit hole and see where it takes you. You could end up on physics videos, makeup tutorials, mind teasers, craft channels, the possibilities are seriously endless. Besides, you might find something new that you like that you had no idea even existed. So pull up your laptop and go down the rabbit hole, see where it leads you.
Have you ever wondered where precisely those stories from your childhood came from? What was that wolf’s deal who wanted to eat little red riding hood? What was the witch’s name who tried to eat Hansel and Gretel? Are there other versions of the stories that you’ve never heard of before? Where did all these stories even come from? All of those are great and very interesting questions that you can explore. You might also be surprised by what sort of answers that you find when it comes to certain things. So, dig up some of your childhood nostalgia and take a walk down memory lane with a magnifying glass to see what your sleuthing will uncover.
There are so many skills in this world that you can accomplish in just a short amount of time it’s fantastic that more people aren’t picking up skills left and right considering the world’s circumstances that we’re in at the current moment. You could learn how to whistle your favorite song. Memorize the first hundred digits of pi using a handy song. Learn something about the world that you didn’t know before, like, for example, why are slugs slimy? Perhaps you want to learn how to juggle or shuffle cards like a professional magician. You could learn some sleight of hand magic too while you’re at it. The possibilities are virtually endless.
If you’ve found yourself without any friends to keep you company, then you can make one yourself! All you need is a bit of scrap fabric, some newspaper or pillow fluff if you have anything on hand, a marker or some buttons, needle, thread, and a shape. Cut two pieces of the shape you have in mind out from an old t-shirt, sew it mostly together, turn it inside out, stuff it, finish sewing it up, then add all the details that you want to give to your new little buddy. Could you provide them with a face, maybe some cute arms? Let your imagination go wild.
I don’t know a lot of people who like to clean their rooms, but it is a necessity nonetheless. However, there is a way to make it more interesting. All you have to do is picture how nice it will be when you’re finished. A fresh pair of clean sheets, the floor completely clear, it’s just a good feeling all around. Not to mention that you’ll feel super productive after all’s said and done even if it’s only a little part of your room, that’s one less part that you’ll have to worry about later.
It doesn’t have to be good, and it doesn’t even need to be coherent. But drawing small doodles and sketches into the margins of a spare piece of paper can be one of the most relaxing ways to unwind and occupy yourself whenever you find yourself stuck bored at home. You could draw a landscape, follow a tutorial for drawing your favorite character, learn how to draw an eye, draw a cute animal. Whatever the heart desires, you can bring to life.
Journaling is different for everyone, but believe it or not, it can be a great way to eat up time. You can customize your journal to be anything you want, fill it with things that you’ve scrapbooked, write down your thoughts and opinions as they come into your head. Remark on a few silly things that’s happened retell stories that make you laugh so you can read them back for later—all sorts of things you can do with it.
