10 Things To Do In Boston When It Rains

The rain this spring has been absurd. In fact, I am offended by it. I know “April showers bring May flowers” and all, but I resent that saying because my birthday is in April and I would like to think of it as the most beautiful month of the year. That being said, sometimes you gotta make lemonade out of lemons, so here are 10 things to do in Boston when it rains.

1. Museum of Fine Arts

Located on Huntington Ave in Boston, the Museum of Fine Arts is a great place to visit if you want to get cultured (or pretend to be cultured to impress a date). Stare inquisitively at a painting, any old painting, and stroke your chin. Step away, then linger back. Cross your arms and start to speak “You know I think…” drift off then say “I think this is a post-modernistic attempt to exemplify the vague yet compelling rebellion from our traditional past in a declarative and unapologetic manner.” That sentence is too long and makes no sense, ensuring you will confuse the person you’re talking to and trick them into thinking you’re smart.

2. Institute of Contemporary Art

Different from the Museum of Fine Arts, you can’t take the same approach to sound smart so just talk about colors and abstractions, and then ask the person next to you, “Don’t you think there is art in just about everything?” Or, you can just go with your friends and make fun of the paintings with similar immature and elementary level comments to the ones I made at the Van Gogh Museum after visiting a coffee shop like, “Were their eyes closed when they were painting this?” or “I’m dropping out of school to be a famous finger painter.”

3. The Paint Bar

Okay, now if you’re tired of staring at the art, you can head on over to The Paint Bar on Newbury Street and become a contemporary artist yourself, really put your money where your mouth is.  The price of sessions ranges from $25-$45 dollars for two and a half hours. This can, however, get pricey if you are looking to drink wine or beer while you paint as it is not included in the set fee, and unfortunately, it is not allowed, by law, to BYOB in Boston. Lame.

4. Bar Hop

I get it, I get it, we’re tired of art. If you’re looking for something low key that takes minimal effort then you can start bar hopping.  Back Bay, Davis Square, Harvard Square and Faneuil Hall offer a lot of good bars within walking distance of each other. Although, it probably doesn’t matter how close things are since it’s raining so maybe skip the walking and uber everywhere?

5. Movies

There are a lot of great and convenient movie theater options in Boston. One I would recommend trying is the Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline. I don’t really have much to say about movies…because we all have been to the movies umpteen times, but before you call me boring, you can get comfy with a nice glass of wine or pint of beer to enjoy during the movie, so it’s like you’re in your living room, but you aren’t. Another perk is that with your ticket, you get a free pass to the Museum of Bad Art. If you get a little creative, you can come up with some great things to do in Boston when it rains.

6. Brooklyn Boulders

If you are looking for something more active, go rock climbing! Brooklyn Boulders is located in Somerville. They also offer yoga and other fitness classes that are fun to do with friends. A day pass is around 25 dollars and you don’t have to have any experience. They also have video games, workspaces, and a lounge.

7. Bowling

Bowling can be a super fun option if you and your friends are looking for a social activity to do on a rainy day. There are many bowling alleys around the city. Depending on where you are located you can try Kings or Lucky Strike in the Fenway area, or South Boston Candlepin. You can still have fun even if you are a bad bowler and a sore loser, just take my word for it!

8. Sam Adams Brewery Tour

If you enjoy beer then why not check out Sam Adam’s Brewery for a tour. You can learn about what goes into making the Sam Adams beers and even sample free beer throughout the tour. The tour is rated very highly on both TripAdvisor and yelp, with even non-beer drinkers saying that the tour was excellent and a “must do” when you’re in Boston. Even if you aren’t a drinker, there are still plenty of things to do in Boston when it rains.

9. Go To A Show

I love love love off-Broadway shows and comedy shows. If you don’t you can X out of this tab, close your internet browser, shut your laptop and gtfo of here. The theater district has a lot of off-Broadway shows. Or if you are looking for comedy shows you should check out Laugh Boston. Additionally, Nick’s Comedy Shop has stand up, and Improv Asylum and Improv Boston offer, you know, improv. There are some great things to do in Boston when it rains.

10. Check Out These Websites

You can check out events for specific dates on websites like Secret Boston and The Boston Calendar which is your best bet if all of my other suggestions bored you to tears.
