Have you ever had that argument with your best friends over which is better, the beach or the lake? Well, I’m here to settle this dispute. It’s easily the lake. Lakes have refreshing fresh water to swim in, fun activities to partake in, and overall have good-vibes perfect for the summer.
It doesn’t matter where you are, the experiences on a lake tend to be similar. Staying at a lake, even if it’s just for the weekend, is the ultimate summer getaway and have many of the same experiences as the ocean, just 10x better. So if you are planning to head to a lake this summer, grab your bathing suit and take a look at these 10 suggestions for what to do while at a lake!
First up are the watersports. This could include waterskiing, wakeboarding, or kneeboarding. Warning you now, all of these activities require a bit of a learning curve, but trust me, once you get it it’s worth it. Go out on the boat with a group of friends or your family and try it out!
Snorkeling in a lake isn’t exactly like the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean but its still very fun. Hunt for lures left behind by fisherman, check out the various fish, and see what other interesting things you can find!
Paddleboarding is my go-to activity on the lake. It is a great way to get out on the water, relax, and enjoy your surroundings. It is also a great form of exercise! You don’t have to paddle out far, but taking some time alone to relax, or going out with your friends to explore, can be a great lake activity option.
Another classic activity at the lake, especially when you are with a large group of friends, is going to a sandbar or anchoring your boat off of a small island that has a sandy area. This is not only a great way to get out of your house and enjoy the sun, but you are guaranteed to meet lots of cool people doing the same thing as you! Grab your inflatable swam and jump right on in!
In my opinion, jet skis are the superior mode of transportation on a lake. They are extremely fast, maneuverable, and not to mention fun. Grab a jet ski and zoom around, jumping the waves and enjoying the sun!
If you are at a larger lake with different towns surrounding it, this is a great way to get out and have some fun. Dock your boat at one of the town docks and find a cute place to eat. Grab a quick lunch if you want to head back out on the boat or end your day here and enjoy the sunset before heading home.
Enjoy the sun and get your tan on with a large inflatable animal! Being on the water will ensure you get the maximum UV rays while also staying cool.
Fishing is a great way to relax and enjoy the lake. It is also very fun to see how big of a fish you can catch. Make it a competition with yourself or grab a group of friends or family and see who can reel in the biggest catch!
The exhilarating feeling you get from tubing is unmatched. Flying over the boat’s wake and jumping waves, you feel free. The best place to tube is on a lake because you don’t have to worry about all of the saltwater getting up your nose and burning or have to question what big animal is swimming around in the water below you.
Depending on the location of the lake you are going to there may be a place to hike. Pack a lunch, put on your sneakers and start walking. Take in the scenery and breathe in all of the fresh air. If there is no place to hike around your lake, I’m sure there are at least places to walk. Walk through different trails, again, enjoying nature. Make this an all-day event or just go out for a couple of hours, it’s completely up to you. Either way, moving your body is a sure way to feel happier and more energized.
Kayaking or canoeing are both great ways to enjoy the beautiful lake scenery. Take your preferred type of boat out before the sun rises and watch as everything lights up around you. It can be a truly magical experience that you don’t want to miss out on.
Fire up the grill! If you are not in the mood to go out for dinner or are trying to save some money, the easiest and best lakeside dinner is a cookout. Buy some chicken and steak and grille those up along with some veggies of your choice. Put together a salad for the side plate and you have yourself a delicious meal.
End your night by setting up a small bonfire outside next to the lake. Add seating around it so you and your family or friends can tell stories, reminisce, and catch up. If you’re feeling it, maybe even roast a marshmallow or two! Having a fire is great as it will keep you nice and toasty at night while you are still outside enjoying the fresh air.
When the sun has set completely and everyone has gone to bed but you are still awake go outside and look up. What do you see? A beautiful sky, full of stars. Lakes are one of my favorite places to go stargazing at because there are no city lights around so the stars shine incredibly bright. Additionally, when laying down by the water, you can hear the gentle lapping of the waves and soothing animal sounds making it ever so relaxing. Give it a try, you won’t regret it.
