Decorating is a delicate endeavor. Some call it ‘creating a new image for oneself’ and they’re not far off the mark. How you decorate your room gives off an impression of yourself. So, decoration no-no’s often reflect poorly on your character, depending on who see’s them. Here is a list of things to avoid in decoration.
It’s okay to keep a high school photo on your mantle, keep your high school blazer in your closet, or to wear your class ring when you go out (that last one may toe the line, though), but to decorate your room only to honor your high schools years with posters and stickers and color-matching sheets? BIG no-no.
It gives off the impression that you’re either A: can’t move on from what’s already happened, or B: too immature to adjust to college life. As much we don’t want to admit it, college is the time to transition to adulthood. High school really only has a few places that it belongs: your mantle, your ring finger, or your closet. Anything is else is too much. A thing to avoid in decoration: High school memorabilia.
When decorating your room, you obviously want to decorate it with things that relate to your interests. Pictures of movie stars you enjoy, posters of popular tv shows or video games you like. Certain ‘out there’ collectibles and bric-a-brac. And you’re free to do that – in moderation. In high school, you’d be forgiven for having posters of some of your likes plastered and taped all over your wall, and to have figurines and collectibles fill your shelves to bursting.
But in college? Nope. You have to be delicate in showing of your likes. Maybe have one poster in a nice frame hanging from your wall, and to have a few choice figurines on the very top of your bookshelf. What I’m getting at is that the extremes you went to during high school can longer apply in college and beyond. You have to be subtle. You have to ‘adult.’ What to avoid in decoration: Overuse of pop-culture items.
One of the basics of decorating, choosing a color scheme in your decorating can easily be considered on of the early pit-falls of decorating. The reason for this is because, while people can easily choose their favorite color, they have a tendency to go too far with it. They decide to have everything be their favorite color. That’s something to avoid. Choosing diluted tones of your color for your bedsheets would be fine. Also consider what matches to said color in the color wheel. Finding matches in color is a good first step in proper styling. What to avoid in decoration: Extreme color usage.
What many people fail to take into account when decorating is the flow of the room. Not just your bedroom, but the kitchen, dining room, living room. You only have so much space to move around. And while it would be nice to have things to fill in the glaring empty spaces, you don’t want to eliminate those same spaces altogether. Or worse, have them be mismatched. Make sure you know the size of any furniture you plan on ordering for your rooms. Make sure there’s plenty of space to move around in. What to avoid in direction: Furniture that takes up too much space, or furniture that doesn’t take up enough space.
While I’ve been going on and on about not going too far with certain decorating strategies, it’s important to not go extreme into the direct opposite of that problem either. You don’t want your room to look too plain or, for lack of a better word, dull. If you do that, you’ll fail to make any impression at all when you have guests over. What to avoid in decoration: An unimpressive room.
