Just like any school, the University of Minnesota has its own share of funny occurrences that every student will likely experience. Although this is the case, it can be said that Minnesota has an extra unique list of these due to the various wide range of weather in the area. Below is a list of 10 things that will happen to you during your time at UMN! Just remember that everyone goes through these and they’re pretty funny once you get the chance to look back on them.
The people who salt and scrape the ice are pretty consistent, but sometimes there’s a time in the day (usually really late at night or early in the morning) where the sidewalk becomes an ice rink. Good luck getting home!
Watch out for those tile floors after a storm!
Let’s be real, a 25 person hot tub with plenty of college students around, how sanitary could that be?
If not from the Minneapolis area, you will definitely notice the odd way many locals have of pronouncing their Os. After a month or so you’l likely even start to catch on and you may not even notice it until you visit home.
Maybe it’s just you passing by or you’re with a friend, whatever the case, it’s still awkward. You can’t tell if they’re judging you or staring, but you figure you should walk as fast as possible without embarrassing yourself.
The campus Starbucks is slow, but nothing is more slow than the line on a half-off Frappuccino day. You could wait thirty minutes in line, but hey it’s worth that icy goodness… at a price that college students can actually afford!
The most frustrating thing is getting your ball stuck and having to inform the front desk. It’ll happen more than once during a game, but it’s worth the frustration because the games are so cheap.
Someone will pass by with a dog and you’ll feel the urge to pet it after going without pets for so long at UMN.
Winter boots are expensive and hard to store! Plus, it’s not like anyone really notices since everyone else is doing the same thing.
Winter jackets are expensive and hard to store too! No one really notices if you wear it more than once because they’re too cold to think much of it.
