It is an all-too-familiar situation. You have your headphones in and your music is cranked up while on public transportation. Suddenly, someone decides to sit next to you and wants to tell you their life story. This happens to you frequently because you are naturally approachable. Things like this happen frequently. If you can relate, below you’ll find 10 things that happen when you’re approachable by nature:
When people see you, they can sense your caring aura. This opens you up to the life story of many people, even if you have no interest in talking to them. However, you do not have the heart to stop them or tell them you are not interested, so you listen.
Like mentioned above, people will constantly choose to sit with you over anyone else on public transportation and will talk to you. If you take the same route at the same time regularly, this likely opens you up to meeting people and making new friends.
One of many things that happen when you’re approachable, and is especially true when you are out alone. You will find yourself the frequent victim of catcalling and random strangers will buy you drinks at the bar. They will also make small talk with you, despite that being your pet peeve.
If you tell someone that you simply do not wish to talk or need to focus on what you are reading, they will not take you seriously. They will talk to you, even if you give every single sign of not being interested, like listening to your headphones or not making eye contact.
I was in a computer lab at my college once and a grad student went off on an excited rant about how he almost had to quit school but as soon as I sat down, he got confirmation that he could continue. He felt the need to tell me out of sheer excitement. Other approachable people have likely had this happen to them as well.
When people are handing things out on the street or are trying to get people to sign something, they often try to approach you. You have had to figure out how to avoid them and likely have ways to maneuver around them after being sucked in a few times.
Homeless people take one look at you and see that you are likely a nice person, so they ask you for money before anyone else. They will tempt you with their life story and try to nab you that way, but you are skeptical because you have heard it all before. You can always count on these types of things that happen when you’re approachable!
I have been in situations where random people come up to me and try to make conversations that seemingly have no point or where people I have been trying to avoid have found ways to talk to me. Approachable people have this happen quite frequently.
I was meeting someone in Philadelphia and was waiting outside the building we were meeting at. Suddenly, someone promoting yoga came up to me and asked me if I knew what stress is and if I experienced it. She was shocked when I said yes and said, “You don’t look stressed.” Approachable people have a way of masking their true feelings, so this happens frequently.
People know that you are approachable and nonjudgmental, so this allows them to feel naturally comfortable around you. This also means that they trust you more than others when it comes to your advice. They know you will give your honest opinion on something but will be gentle with criticism.
