15 Things Only People Who Grew Up In Palos Verdes Understand
Palos Verdes, which is located on top of the Peninsula, is home to some of the most beautiful real estate with stunning views, the best education around, and the best cultural pursuits of the Peninsula. PV is the perfect little escape from the city life in LA, as we are located right next to the beach and are a little hidden gem from the crazy city life. One of the beauties of PV is that because we are so ‘hidden’ that we have our own little unique town vibe. There is just so much beauty and history in Palos Verdes that tourists will just never understand or relate to, no matter how hard us locals try to explain it. Here’s 15 things only people who grew up in Palos Verdes understand!
1. We Call Home “PV” or “The Hill”
When someone asks where we are from, we NEVER say Palos Verdes. We always refer to home as “PV” or “The Hill,” and usually people will give us a questioning look. We then have to explain that we are from Palos Verdes, and if they still don’t know, we just end up saying we are from the South Bay area. Eventually they will nod their heads and know where we are talking about, but only the real locals know PV is home!
2. The PV, Pen Rivalry Is SO Real
There’s nothing like the good ‘ole rivalry on the hill between Palos Verdes High School and Peninsula High School. When deciding which high school to attend, you honestly can’t go wrong. Both of these schools are amazing school filled with very hard working and dedicated students, teachers and faculty. The only issue is you have to pick one school! Once you make your high school decision, you are sworn into the school and bleed either red and black or black and gold forever. Football season? Don’t even mention it. The rivalry never dies!
3. We are Home to Terranea Resort
The once Marineland transformed into the beautiful Terranea Resort that we are lucky to have in our backyard. This resort is home to many of our summer jobs, along with our favorite spot to hike and play golf, and some of our most favorite restaurants on the Hill. It is also home to beautiful weddings and special events that overlook the ocean. This is one spot that we love to bring tourists to or recommend them to stay at the resort to get the full “PV experience.”
4. We are Home to Trump Golf Course
We are also home to the Trump National Golf Course, which also overlooks the ocean. This is another spot that most of us work at during summers, along with our spot to play golf here with friends, hike down to the ocean, or come here for special events or dinner dates. It’s even one of our favorite spots to take pictures at because of the gorgeous views.
5. Yellow Vase is every girls favorite spot
Our favorite brunch spot (for all the fellow PV girls) is Yellow Vase! Whether we spent the morning hiking, need a little coffee pick-me-up or are having a get together with our girls, this is always our go-to spot. We love the coffee, but we love the food even more! And not to mention, it’s the perfect spot to take pictures at. Our favorite spot is the one in Golden Cove.
6. Point Vicente is our hangout spot
Point Vicente is our spot, especially every Sunday afternoon. It’s the perfect little place to go to spend some time outdoors, along with eating some food and having a picnic with our family and friends. It is also our favorite spot to go walk along the trails with our doggies, and whale watch during the winter. It’s even the perfect spot for date night, or a place to showoff to all the tourists. Don’t forget to check out the famous Point Vicente Light House! This place has it all.
7. Riviera Village in Redondo
The Riviera Village in Redondo is our place to grab some food and drinks after school, before or after a day at the beach, or even on a typical Friday night. There are so many great restaurants and shops on this road and we love to meet our friends here. Some of our favorites are the Riviera Mexican Grill, Creme de la Crepe, and Pedone’s Pizza.
8. Summer Nights at PBC
One of our favorite things to do during summer is to have a barbecue and bonfire down at PBC with our family and friends. This spot is perfect to make dinner, play some games, and enjoy s’mores by the fire. It’s even the perfect little spot to stargaze at once the sun sets. Don’t have a membership? No problem! You are bound to have a few friends that can help get you in!
9. We don’t go to beach in June because of “June Gloom”
Unless you are a surfer, then you know not to go to the beach in June. We are faced with the forbidden “June Gloom” that ruins any chances of having a nice beach day throughout the month of June, and sometimes July, too. The perfect time to hit up the beach is in August, right when the weather starts to heat up!
10. The PV Mall is dead
Honestly, besides eating at Good Stuff or going to the movie theater, who even goes to the PV Mall anymore?!
11. We love to support the local Mom and Pop restaurants
We love a good mom and pop restaurant, and we love to support our local businesses. We usually have our favorite spots throughout the Hill, but The Appetizer in Rolling Hills is one of our favorites. You can always catch us there eating a pizza or a sandwich!
12. The PV Surfer gang
Us locals know that the PV surfers are extremely territorial and do not want us surfing on their turf. Steer clear of Malaga Cove and anywhere in that area, as those are their surf spots and they are not looking for newbies to join their group.
13. We are Home to Wayfarer’s Chapel
We are home to the stunning Wayfarer’s Chapel, which is one of the most beautiful spots on the Hill with incredible views of the ocean. This chapel is where may of us have been for a family wedding or two, and may even have plans to get married here ourselves. This is another spot that we love to show off to all the tourists, and we are usually shocked when they already know about it or have seen it before. It is much more famous than we thought!
14. Handel’s Ice Cream
This is our favorite spot for some delicious homemade ice cream. No matter how long the line may be, we know the ice cream is worth waiting for. Oh, and not to mention, every Tuesday night…You know what to do!
15. We see somewhere everywhere we go
We always have to leave the house looking (somewhat) presentable because we always run into at least one person we know. Sometimes it’s super exciting because you will see your besties, or friends you haven’t seen in years, but other times you run into someone you don’t really want to see. It can either get super exciting or awkward, depending on the situation.
