Attending college gives you the opportunity to live in a different state or country for 4 years. I lived in Boston for 4 years and discovered many facts about the city no one has ever told me. Boston fans and New York fans have an epic beef for no reason. It’s taking two of the biggest fandoms with big egos going head to head. Yes, as a New York native I will forever represent the Yankees, Knicks, and GIants. Whenever I’m in Boston, I keep my mouth shut about my fandom! I have no time to argue about championships and fandom for 3 hours! Patriot fans will piss you off but you gotta give props to the franchise! This is a fact no one tells you about living in Boston!
Bostonians don’t play when it comes to sports. It’s a ritual for them to hit up the bar or chill at their house to catch a Patriots game. If you’re a fan of a team that isn’t from New England, they will argue and bring up beating your team during a play off.
While other cities have a Starbucks or Coffee Bean on every block, Boston has a Dunkin Donuts on every street! The coffee is cheap and will satisfy your caffeine needs. Depending on the drink expect to be drinking a form of diabetes in a cup. It sucks when certain Dunkin stores charge 25 cents to double cup your drink! This is a fact no one tells you about living in Boston!
Boston is the home for many upcoming tech and fashion companies. If you’re into fashion specifically shoes, the Converse headquarters is located Boston. Majority of these companies offer internships and jobs to students and post grads!
Boston is one of the spots for seafood after Seattle. Except to treat yourself with a lobster roll or a bowl of clam chowder. Bostonians know the differences between good and trash seafood. They will roast you if your clam chowder isn’t the right texture!
Every major city has its own slang. New Yorkers love to say “DeadAss” while LA natives say “Hella”. Bostonians love to say the word “Wicked”. It’s part of their everyday vocabulary. Expect to hear someone in your class lecture say “That party last night was wicked crazy”. This is another thing no one tells you about living in Boston.
Like any other city, each neighborhood will have a distinct personality. Allston is for the hipsters and college students. While Jamaica Plain is for the newly gentrifiers looking to put vegan cafes all over the area. Each neighborhood comes with a different personality for interacting.
The T is the oldest subway system in America. A good chunk of the trains are from back in the day but are currently being renovated. Due to the trains being old, there’s always a chance for delays because of trains breaking down. It’s important to plan ahead when taking the T! This is a fact that no one tells you about living in Boston.
If you have to take the green line expect to be squashed. It’s the worst train to take if you suffer with claustrophobia because a majority of Bostonians and Massachusetts natives use it to commute. Expect the train to be packed after a Red Sox game!
The T closing early is so inconvenient for those who work late hours and college students who love to party. It was so much easier when they were open till 3 on weekends! If you’re someone who likes to go out at night, you either have to leave earlier than expected or catch an Uber. Let’s be real, Uber and Lyft isn’t cheap so make sure you have money to go out!
The clubs and bars close at 2am which is pretty early! In most major cities the parties aren’t lit till 2am! It’s best to just go to a house party! Most house parties in the area end at 4am depending on who’s hosting and attending it. This is a fact that no one tells you about living in Boston.
Everyone goes to Top Of The Hub to brag about it or take pictures! Plenty of people say the service is good but the food is mediocre. You’re actually paying for good views and service but the food doesn’t live up to the hype!
New England winters are no joke! If you’re the type to wanting to look cute and not freeze during the winter, GOOD LUCK! When it comes to winter fashion, it’s all about warmth and comfort. Don’t waste your time wearing Uggs during the winter, You will SLIP and SLIDE onto the streets! Buy some LL Bean Boots and call it a day!
Boston drivers are BOLD! They won’t hesitant to hit you, especially if you’re jaywalking. Yes the pedestrian has the right of way, but who wants to risk their life while trying to cross the street to catch the train at Park Street.
All the creatives hang out in Allston. If you’re looking to attend an art show or hang with some musicians, they’re usually in Allston. Just take the Green Line, you’ll meet some super talented people. This is a fact that no one tells you about living in Boston.
Boston is the home of a bunch of universities. Expect to see a college student walking around the streets heading to class or going out after a long week of exams and papers. You can also tell which university a student attends depending on their neighborhood and how they dress!
Bostonians literally act as if Tom Brady is their cousin. You will get cursed out if you talk shit about Tom Brady. There are guys who have ended relationships due to their girlfriends not liking Tom Brady! This is a fact that no one tells you about living in Boston.
When you think about cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville comes to mind when thinking of music and musicians. Boston actually has a dope music scene due to Berklee College Of Music and Allston being the home of the Hipsters. You can catch the musicians getting together at events in Newbury St or hosting shows at the Middle East Lounge in Cambridge.
