Freshman year of college can be intimidating. However, if you’re about to attend college in New York, here’s what you should expect your freshman year at Marist:
1. It’s a bar school, seriously, no good house parties ever
2. The random roommate isn’t so bad-
they do a pretty good job of matching you up with someone you would live comfortably with
3. Don’t underestimate the winter months, the wind off the river is brutal-
invest in a good pair of boots too because they lie on the tour, there are no heated sidewalks, just mini skating rinks where the concrete should be
4. Choosing classes for the spring is like the hunger games, especially if you come in with little to no credits
5. Housing is ever worse, friendships are often lost so make sure you have good points
6. Priority points are *really* important, so show up to some club meetings and do service and intramurals to make up for any lost in grades or write ups
7. The lack of school spirit is ridiculous, but the girl’s basketball team is actually really entertaining
8. The library is so small, especially during finals week
9. The Writing Center is an invaluable tool, take advantage (second floor of the library through the glass doors)
10. The dining hall gets really old really fast, so save your Thrifty for the weekends at the new dining hall in Building D when it is extra bad
11. Get in line for the Broadway shows a few hours early, can’t pass up a $25 opportunity
12. Your Marist experience can be drastically affected by the type of RA you have- try to establish a good relationship with yours
13. The WiFi SUCKS, and so does the cell signal inside the dorms
14. RateMyProfessor is the most important tool you have
15. Never try to sneak in alcohol past three o’clock, it’s not worth the risk security searching your bag
16. Try to get the textbooks from anywhere but the bookstore, most students re-sell them
17. Get a Rite Aid card
18. Shower shoes- wear shower shoes
19. 8ams are terrible, and the 6:30-9 is even worse
20. Hancock Starbucks coffee is better than the library
