Freshman year of college can be pretty nerve-wracking but it can also be one of the most fun years of your life. Anyone who has been a freshman at Hofstra knows that this is true. From new friends to new experiences, here are some things no one tells you about freshman year at Hofstra University!
What is a Hof cat you ask? A Hof cat is one of the furry little beings who roam around campus that everyone stops to pet and look at. Even if you aren’t a cat person, you end up adoring the little fluffballs that Mr. and Mrs. Hofstra left behind.
Just finished a paper at 11 and looking for some dinner? HofUSA. Coming home late with friends? HofUSA. Wanting some grease? HofUSA.
No, the stereotype of the big, bad upperclassmen is not true. You will meet the sweetest people of all ages at Hofstra and they’re always there to lend a hand or hang out with you.
There’s always an opportunity to head into the city whether it’s a musical, a museum tour or just a trip with you friends. Hop on the Hofstra Shuttle then the LIRR and you’re on your way!
Okay, maybe this is an obvious one but it’s still true! Need to bang out a reading or an essay? The library is where to be. The higher the floor, the quieter the room which is perfect for group projects on floor 2 and silent cramming on floor 10.
It may be a college cliché but at Hofstra you really can do it all. Join as much as you and see what you like and what fits into your schedule. There’s so many opportunities to do things all over campus and each club is pretty inclusive. Maybe you’ll even find your passion!
There’s a reason all of the upperclassmen will ask you to buy them food. Freshman meal plans are ridiculously large! So if your junior friend asks you to buy them a snack, no worries you’ve got this!
Who doesn’t love free concerts and a free carnival? You can even buy your favorite carnival foods with your swipe card! It’s like a dream come true! Especially seeing Fetty Wap!
What can I say? I’m guilty of it too. But to be fair, there’s nothing like a PSL before a 9 a.m. class.
That girl with the cool hair in the stu? That funny guy who you always see in the elevator? Friends are everywhere and most people are just as eager to meet you as you are them!
The professors at Hofstra are some of the nicest and most easy-going people you could ever have as teachers. They genuinely care about their students and most will go out of their way to help you. They’re also a lot of fun to get to know!
Okay…so you’re going to be making friends with a ton of people. Everyone at Hofstra is just too darn friendly! We are a pride after all! RA’s included. They are not to be feared, they are some awesome friends and resources for you on campus.
Sure, alcohol is a huge part of college culture but it’s not the only way to have fun at Hofstra. There are tons of things to do on campus, off campus and in the city. There’s always something going on somewhere on campus so you can always find something fun to do that doesn’t require alcohol!
Seriously, all I want right now is my mom’s spaghetti, meatballs and sauce.
Commonly known as PSafe, Public Safety saves the day every time. On crutches and need a ride to class? PSafe. Locked yourself out of your room? PSafe. Want to feel safe on campus? PSafe. They do it all with smiles on their faces.
A college freshman without GroupMe is almost unheard of. Groupchats are essential to friend groups, group projects and random get togethers. It wouldn’t be college without groupchats.
Going from high school and a part time job to college was a huge adjustment with the amount of time you have to do whatever you want. And with all of that free time comes time to make new friends, join new clubs and just have a blast around Hofstra.
Unless you’re a complete neat freak, your dorm room probably looks like your armoire threw up all over your floor. You throw a shirt here, a bra there and the next thing you know you’re staring at The Great Mount Clotherest.
Not only do they look super cool to cross over but they help you get to class so quickly. And you better believe you will see at least 10 people you know crossing it at the same time as you at any given time of the day.
You get to have so many new experiences, make tons of new friends and be completely independent. You’ll never forget the memories you make throughout freshman year and the rest of college. Choosing Hofstra was the best decision that I ever made! Welcome to the Pride!
