The 20 Things I Wish I Knew Before High School

Reflecting back, there are so many things I wish I knew before high school and now that I have a voice, it's worth telling! Here's what you need to know before starting junior high.

At the time, taking that leap from middle school to high school is a huge deal. There is an abundant amount of memories, life lessons, and friendships to make throughout those four years. For many, people look back and say high school was the time of their lives. However, it’s important to remember that there are a lot of cringe worthy moments us post high school grads wish we could forget. To spare you the pain, here are 20 things I wish I knew before high school.

 1. Your mom is always right, and even when she’s wrong, she’s actually right.

She’ll spot a bad friend or boyfriend from a mile away. Her opinion may annoy you, but no one has your best interest at heart more then your mother. This is definitely one of the  things I wish I knew before high school.

2. Take care of your body.

At this age you are growing mentally and physically. Your body is there for you from your first heart beat to your last. Reward it by exercising, drinking more water and eating healthier. Not because you don’t like how you look or people don’t like how you look but because your body deserves it.

People that want to see you succeed and want what’s best for you. You can’t rise above without having chaos to lift you.

One day you’ll be packing your bags and living on your own without your sister stealing your clothes and your brother playing his music to loud. You’ll miss the little things that bothered you most.

5. Also find some time to hangout with your pets.

Their time on earth is way shorter than ours. Our love and attention means the world to them and I promise once they are gone, there’s is nothing you’ll miss more. This is definitely one of the things I wish I knew before high school.

6. Throughout high school, people will leave and that’s okay.

You will outgrow numerous people, but it is all about finding yourself. You find out what people are worth having in your life and what people aren’t. If they want to leave hold the door open for them but don’t get mad. Try to remember all the good times and know that all good things must come to an end. Remember that you are allowed to outgrow people. You’re better off being alone then being with someone who makes you feel alone. People are put in and out of your life for a reason. Just because your cross paths doesn’t mean you will be on the same path together forever.

7. Help people without expecting anything in return.

They may be ungrateful but who cares? And those who are grateful will tell you. Help people because one day you’ll need the help. You can tell a lot about a person by how they treat the people who helped them when they no longer need help.

8. School is extremely important.

As much as you don’t want to hear it, it’s the truth. Your grades can be the difference between you not getting into any college, and going to college for free. Work hard now so later you don’t have to. Future you will be grateful.

You will make so many mistakes but the point is to learn from them. You may not be able to control what happens in every situation but you can control your attitude and how you deal with it. Besides, if bad things didn’t happen, how would you being able to feel the good ones?

10. Stay humble.

Not everyone is as fortunate as you and not everyone has had the advantages that you’ve had.

11. Be kind and remain humble because not everyone is as fortunate as you, and not everyone has had the advantages that you’ve had.

Even when the world is not kind to you and be kind to all. Rich or poor, pretty or not so pretty, smart or dumb. We live in a world where perfection is continuously sought. What we fail to understand is that perfection doesn’t exist. People won’t remember the things you say to them but they will always remember the way you made them feel. You will never regret being kind.

People will take things out of proportion and use your words against you. Don’t give them a reason to keep going on and on. Prove your point and be done with it.
