If you’re anything like me, you’ve heard the horror stories of the Freshman 15. You’ve been warned that no matter what you do, no matter how hard you try, you’ll gain the 15 lbs, whether you want to or not. You can pretend that these rumors don’t affect you but, on the inside, you’re freaking out. I mean who wants to gain 15 lbs? And how are all those fit girls you keep passing doing it? You’ve almost accepted the fact that the Freshman 15 is just part of the college experience, but I’m here to tell you that it’s not. Avoiding the Freshman 15 might not be as hard as you might think, in fact it can be fun. Yes, I said it… Staying fit can be fun! So, don’t lose sleep about gaining the infamous Freshman 15 ‘cause you, yes you, can avoid it all together. No need to worry because with these helpful tips avoiding the extra lbs will be a breeze.
1. If you don’t have a workout playlist, do you even workout?
Motivating myself to go to the gym can be hard but a good playlist can make the difference. I swear listening to music cuts the time in half. It doesn’t matter if I’m listening to Beyoncé or rocking out to EDM, I’m ready to sweat it out.
2. Hydrate or Die
Fit girls never leave their dorm room without a water bottle! I drink water like it’s my job. Doesn’t matter if I’m headed to the dining hall or class, you’ll see me with a water bottle in hand. Not only do I stay hydrated but it’s good for the environment.
3. Workout with FRIENDS
Working out is hard and who better to suffer with than your bestie? Having friends will motivate you to get to the gym and push you once you get there. Working out with fit girl friends is a major key in anyone’s workout regimen, especially in college.
4. Don’t become a victim of snacks
It’s 12:00pm and you’ve just started your five-page paper due the next day but you can’t focus cause your hunger is getting the best of you. Don’t run to the vending machine… Rather have healthy snacks on hand such as apples, bananas, and nuts to curve the hunger. Snack like Ryan Gosling is watching.
5. Namaste AF
Yoga, the best thing you can do for your body and your mind. After a week of midterms, it’s time to hit the studio and release some stress. Nothing feels better than knowing you took the time to care for your body! Some schools even offer free classes.
6. Take their Vitamins
If your campus is anything like mine the dining hall food lacks any sort of nutritional value. No need to fear, with a daily vitamin you can meet your daily intake requirements. Also, taking vitamins is made fun with themed gummy tablets.
7. Make Whole Foods not just a grocery store, but a lifestyle
I visit Whole Foods so often that I’m known on a first name basis… Whole Foods has the best selection of healthy on-the-go snacks that any college girl could ever dream of. A weekly trip to Whole Foods is a must.
8. Sneakers for the WIN
I easily walk 1,000 miles a day on campus so sneakers are a must. Whether I’m wearing a dress or sweatpants a good pair of sneakers can go with both. You’ll never sacrifice style with a fresh pair of kicks but you’ll keep your feet in good shape.
9. Make stretching part of your daily routine
Stretch right before you go to bed to ensure a good night’s sleep and to lower your chances of pulling a muscle. Stretching has endless health benefits, benefits you should take advantage of!
