College is all about asking questions. Whether you are a current student, soon-to-be Tar Heel, or a UNC Alum, here are 10 questions you will remember asking yourself during your four wonderful years on the Hill. These 10 things UNC at Chapel Hill students think are spot on!
The tradition on campus is to drink from the legendary old well on the first day of classes in order to get a 4.o that semester. Yes- people pee in it, but that water is holy ’round here.
Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. If you’re unfamiliar with college basketball, coming to Carolina might be a bit of culture shock. But take it from me, save yourself the embarrassment and research this beforehand so that when they show up at a frat party, you can freak out with everyone else.
It’s no secret Greek life is huge at Carolina but it’s not for everyone. If you find yourself drawn to going Greek, go for it! But no worries if you aren’t. Frat parties are for all and that’s honestly the best part. Besides, you’ll still find yourself rushing to your 8 ams anyway.
The Dean Dome is where the UNC Basketball team dunks on every mediocre team that tries to cross us and it’s also where Michael Jordan, a UNC alum, spoke the legendary words, “THE CEILING IS THE ROOF!” The story goes, he was trying to say something along the lines of “the sky’s the limit” but ended up producing his most notable quote on campus instead. Whenever you find yourself asking this question, stop, and remember Michael Jordan is the GOAT. Never question the GOAT. Also, the ceiling really is the roof in the Dean Dome… Legendary. You know you think this if you are a UNC at Chapel Hill student.
Michael JordanNo, this is an esteemed university after all. Duke, or “Dook” as we say on the Hill, is our rival school located 10 miles away in Durham, North Carolina. Dook is a reference to the act of “defecating, or to poop,” and honestly there is no better way to describe them or their basketball. Go Heels!
Tempting… but once you go here there’s no denying you were ever anything but a Tar Heel born and a Tar Heel bred until one day you become a Tar Heel dead. Now finish that paper!
Both. As for what exactly a “Tar Heel” is, no one really knows for sure. There are many stories surrounding the namesake, but the most popular of which goes back to the Civil War. A group of North Carolina soldiers scolded their fellow troops for retreating during battle and threatened to stick tar to their heels and Confederate General Robert E. Lee is supposedly quoted to have said, “God bless the Tar Heel boys!”
The Frank Porter Graham Student Union is not only home to all of UNC’s clubs on campus but is also the home to some of the most legendary bagels. Weekday mornings at 10 am, the line for an Alpine bagel is out the door. In conclusion, yes, it is worth the wait.
Yes, even though you’ll be inside Kenan stadium 2 hours before the game starts… free stuff!! You don’t go to UNC at Chapel Hill if you haven’t thought this.
My poor advice: don’t worry about occasionally taking the L. D’s get degrees, kids! Just not scholarships…
