When I tell people that I’m a single person, it’s often met with sympathetic looks and a promise that I’ll meet someone soon. The thing is, I’m not sad about it. On the contrary, I love being single. I know, it sounds like something only in denial and eternally single people say, but I really value my freedom and at the moment I’m busy working on myself (and I’m ok with that).
If you’re used to dating someone and now find yourself newly single, I know it can be an adjustment and while dating something undeniably has its perks, being single does too. Need convincing? Here are 10 things every single person has to do.
What better way could there be to celebrate your freedom and independence than by challenging yourself and taking a solo trip? Whether it’s a short city break or a few months backpacking, solo travelling is one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences a person could have. Of course, you don’t have to be a single person to go solo travelling, but taking longer trips while you’re seeing someone can put a strain on the relationship. What’s more, solo travelling when you’re single means that you’re open for all of those summer romances that await.
Just because you’re a single person, it doesn’t mean you have to be a hermit. There are so many activities that are just as great, if not better do alone and going for coffee is a good place to start. Loads of people go to cafes by themselves so it won’t be daunting. What’s more, cafes are great places to meet guys so you might actually come away with more than just a caffeine buzz.
Being single is so much fun, largely because you can self-indulgently, unapologetically flirt to your heart’s content. Whether it’s with that cute guy at the bar, the newbie at work or your long-time crush, be sure to take every flirting opportunity available.
Being a single person means more time to spend with your best friends, so pick up the phone and organise a date night with your mates. You could go out for dinner, have a cocktail evening or do food and a movie at home. Who said date night was just for couples?
There’s no better time to get in shape than when you’re single so use the extra time that you would have spent with your guy, working on yourself. You could join a gym, take up running or get involved in a team sport, whatever works for you. Getting into fitness is so good for your mental and physical health and feeling and looking great does wonders for your self-esteem too.
If you’re a single person then it’s time to pick up the phone and plan a night out with your friends. Going out is always fun with the right people but even more so when you’re single. With no boyfriend to question who you’re going with and no reason not to accept drinks from that cute guy at the bar, going out offers the chance to really let your hair down and have a good time with your best friends.
It’s always important to treat yourself now and again, but even more so when you’re single. Whether you fancy having your nails done, buying some new clothes or going to see your favourite band, just because you don’t have a guy to spoil you it doesn’t mean that you can’t treat yourself instead.
Dating is so much fun and it’s the best way to boost your confidence and get out there, even if you’re not looking for anything serious. There are loads of ways to meet guys, from dating apps like Tinder to asking your friends to set you up so, enjoy being a single person and go on as many dates as you can.
One of the best things about being a single person is that it leaves you with a lot of time to focus on yourself. It’s so important to spend some time working on achieving your dreams, whether that means aiming for that dream job or acing your exams. Being single means you’re free from distractions and therefore able to spend time on what’s important to you.
When you’re in a relationship, you might feel like you can’t do anything radically different without bringing up questions. So, if you’re feeling stuck in a rut then there’s no better a time to reinvent yourself than when you’re single. You could try out a new hairstyle, a new wardrobe or even just shake up your routine. After all, why not?
