Fidget Spinners.
Have you heard of them? Of course you have. It is one of the most ridiculous trends that has made its way to students ranging from middle school to college.
Fidgeting is the act of making small movements, especially those of the hands and feet, through nervousness or impatient. For certain kids it is uncontrollable and it becomes a diagnosable disorder called ADHD, or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
The “toy” is marketed as a way for kids who fidget, especially those with ADHD, to keep themselves occupied and focused on their task at hand, which may be extremely difficult for someone with this condition. It is the children of today who have turned the exciting and new aid into a toy that only distracts them from their tasks and creates an unfocused atmosphere.
The widespread acceptance of such an aid being used as a toy for kids who don’t need it is entirely unfair to kids who actually do benefit from it. Crazes ultimately results in bans within schools and judgmental looks that don’t make kids who need it feel comfortable.
When kids abuse aids and use them for their unintended purpose there is a lapse in additional thought for others. And it would be great if it could come to an end.
As someone who actually does fidget and can benefit from such aids in the classroom or lecture hall, it is offensive to see kids using them on the streets and trying to do tricks and almost mocking it’s original purpose.
The mass acceptance of the spinners may be a good thing for a kid who needs it. And wants to blend in with his friends; however, when the purpose is abused then there is an issue.
We certainly can’t stop such a trend. We can try to educate people why they shouldn’t be considered simply “toys” that children can just throw around like it’s nothing. That’s the only way to beat the widespread and unfair acceptance of fidget spinners.
