The Ultimate Ranking Of The Dorms At Sonoma State

The first thing you think of when Sonoma State housing comes to mind is wine. Every village and building is named after popular wine, which is either really boujee or really encouraging. When ranking dorms at Sonoma State, last is most definitely not least. Sonoma is known for their amazing housing, and each dormitory village is amazing beyond compare. SSU cannot give every student housing because it is desired by more students than they can accommodate. However, some dorms have received upgrading more recently, and well… here is a ranking of how that upgrading went down.

1. Zinfandel

While Zin may be last on this totem pole, it does have its own pool, and the mailing room is in the village. The student health center is also a 30 second walk from Zin. Otherwise, Zin is basically two to four doubles, and one can be a triple because dorms can go up to nine people. Zin also has an upstairs and downstairs. Zin has a living space, but no kitchen. The furniture and painting is all the least new in campus housing, and can feel the most like a “regular school dorm”.

2. Verdot

Verdot is the closest village to campus, making for a quick walk to classes and to the Student Center. Its dorms can be for four to eight people. The four people rooms are split up into two doubles, with one bathroom, one shower, and a living room space. The eight people share a living room space, but then it is split up into something similar to the four bedrooms, with one bathroom per four people and two doubles. Singles in Verdot are separate, and share a bathroom with another single. The closests feature no doors, and the furniture is a classic light wood dorm color. The villages go up to two floors. As someone who has lived in Verdot, I can definitely say you can make it feel just like home! However, my roommate was 6’1 and had to get a new shower head because the showers are for smaller people, so you might want to keep that in mind if you’re much over the average. Most Verdot rooms also have a bathtub as well as the shower. A lot of students refer to Verdot as the “verghetto” of campus.

3. Cabernet

Cab is the farthest village from campus, but was recently renovated and looks like it. Cab has the same set up as Zin and Verdot, however also houses triples. They have marble countertops and is basically just super sparkly and new. If you’re a freshman and can’t afford Sauvignon, Cab is probably the way to go.

4. Sauvignon

Sauv is open to upperclassman as well as freshman. Sauv was most recently renovated, and is the village they show you on school tours. It’s is really beautiful walking through the village, and pretty much looks like apartment housing. There are two levels of dorms in each building. There is a living space and a full kitchen. Sauv has doubles, singles, and triples in each house, and can room up to nine people.

5. Beaujolais

Beaujolais Village – mostly referred to as “beauj” is simply beautiful. Beauj is also only for upperclassmen. These are apartment style, with three floors. Living on the third floor does require three flights of stairs – but you get your daily cardio and you can’t hear anyone above you! Beauj features four bedrooms, all singles. Each single features its own closet, storage space, and it’s very own bathroom. No more sharing with anyone! Beauj also has a full kitchen and living room. There are bike racks downstairs, and wifi per apartment. The floors are even heated for those chilly Sonoma nights!

6. Tuscany

Walking through Tuscany village feels like walking through the neighborhood no one expected to be able to afford your second year of college. Tuscany is only for upperclassmen. Tuscany is separated from Beaujolais by a fountain and a large pool (yes, you can definitely swim in it!) Each cute townhouse fits six people. Walking in, you get a full, brand new kitchen. The kitchen has a full refrigerator, new microwave, oven, and dishwasher. If you like cooking or baking this might be a solid reason Tuscany is just for you. Beyond that, there is a living room, fully furnished. The living room is big enough to hold a kickback if you feel like inviting some friends over, you could even host a dinner party! There is also a double downstairs. Upstairs, on the second floor, there is another double and two singles. The doubles feature their own spacious bathroom, complete with their own bathtubs. There are two closets, two desks, and two beds. They come with storage under the beds and a window separating them. The furniture in the rooms are a a deep wood color, and the floors are all carpet. You also have a back porch, and your own bike rack. Tuscany has heating throughout the dorm, and its own wifi per house.
