The Ultimate Playlist For A Broken Heart

Having your heart broken is one of the worst feelings ever. Sometimes you just want to lie down, listen to some sad songs, and cry it out. Here is the ultimate playlist for a broken heart!

1. My Immortal – Evanescence

“These wounds won’t seem to heal, this pain is just too real, there’s just so much that time cannot replace…” This is the heartbreak anthem of the 2000s. You definitely sobbed your heart out to this at least twice during your teenage years. It is the perfect song to play whilst you lie in a dark room and wallow in pain. Bonus points if you dress like Amy Lee in the music video whilst you do so.

2. If I Were A Boy – Beyoncé

Beyoncé’s 2008 power ballad is a break up classic. When he breaks your heart, this song understands. This is perfect for an angry break up or any time you are mad at your significant other. You know you would make a better boyfriend than him.

3. Since U Been Gone – Kelly Clarkson

This is the angry break up anthem, perfect for when you’re convinced you are over them and want them out of your life for good. It will help you express your rage and raise your mood again. Try not to trash your room whilst listening to it though.

4. Skinny Love – Bon Iver/Birdy

Both versions of this classic are perfect for a heartbreak playlist and it’s really up to you which one you choose. Bon Iver’s is a bit more gutsy whilst Birdy’s is solemn and devastating. Either way, you won’t make it through “come on, skinny love, just last the year” without sobbing.

5. Broken Strings – James Morrison and Nelly Furtado

“The truth hurts, the lie’s worse” sang these two pop legends, and they were right. This rousing anthem belongs on your heartbreak playlist. Hopefully it’s karaoke quality might pull you out of your misery long enough to sing along.

6. Happier – Bastille and Marshmello

The video for this song is the most heartbreaking thing in the world, and I wouldn’t recommend watching it if you are already sad – but the song itself will fit beautifully on your playlist. “Lately I’ve been thinking I want you to be happier,” songs Dan Smith of Bastille. It’s a pleasant reminder that sometimes relationships don’t work out and that is for the best.

7. Someday You Will Be Loved – Death Cab For Cutie

When you’ve been dumped, it can be hard to believe that you’ll ever find love again. Death Cab for Cutie have this covered in this gorgeous song from their album Plans. The song is about someone who leaves their partner when they realise they are bad for them and know they could do better – which you definitely can too.

8. When You’re Gone – Avril Lavigne

“I always needed time on my own. I never thought I’d need you there when I cried.” This is another wallow in misery song – but sometimes you need that crying session to pick yourself back up! That opening piano line has probably haunted you since it was released back in 2007, and it will still break your heart today.

9. Big Girls Don’t Cry – Fergie

This is a great song for when you were the “dumper” not the “dumpee”, but it works either way. “It’s time to be a big girl now, and big girls don’t cry” says Fergie, and that might be the inspiration you need to pull yourself together and move on.

10. The Man Who Can’t Be Moved – The Script

This song is a nice reminder that you are probably being missed too and that your ex may be pining for you as much as you are for them. It’s a sweet song that fits nicely on your heartbreak playlist. Plus those gorgeous vocals from Danny O’Donoghue will quickly turn your frown upside down.

“You seem very well, things look peaceful. I’m not quite as well, I thought you should know…” This iconic 90s classic is the definitive angry break up song. Alanis belts this number about being dumped for another woman and how she hopes her ex’s new woman knows about the promises he made to Alanis. If you’ve had your heartbroken by someone else, this is the song you need in your life.

12. So What – P!nk

P!nk wrote this song about her divorce from Carey Hart – who then appeared in the video, got back together with P!nk, and had a child with her. Proof that a breakup isn’t always the end! It’s a hilarious song about the chaos of breaking up and a reminder that you are still a rockstar, no matter what your ex says.

13. Goodbye To You – Michelle Branch

Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer know how heartbreaking this song is, and if you were a Willow and Tara fan it will only make you more upset. It is a gorgeous ballad which encapsulates everything that hurts about letting go of the person you loved.

14. Somebody That I Used To Know – Gotye

“You didn’t have to cut me off, acting like we never happened and that we were nothing.” This song sounds a lot happier than it is. At its core, Somebody That I Used To Know is about how it feels when you are dumped and the person you loved now feels like a stranger to you.

15. Happy Ending – MIKA

MIKA was always known for his upbeat pop numbers, but this sad ballad was a nice change of pace for him. A song about a man who wishes his ex well, but is devastated by the loss of the relationship. It was one of his best songs and definitely deserves a place on your heartbreak playlist.
