Here’s the thing: You’ve been stuck inside studying and preparing for midterms while a whole season of fun has been happening just outside your dorm. Never fear: fall break is finally here, and it doesn’t matter if you’re in the heart of Vermont or stuck in LA, we all have fall break bucket lists we’d like to follow.
Here are some awesome autumnal activities to add to your list!
Find an orchard nearby, grab some friends, put on a sweater and get to apple-picking. You’ll want the air to be as crisp as that Red Delicious, though, between you and me, I’d personally go for anything in the ‘party’ variety (Fuji or Gala all the way). A lot of these little farms also sell some really neat types of cider and jam and all sorts of things to really get you in the fall spirit.
Whether it’s the newest autumn drink that Starbucks is offering this year or the classic Pumpkin Spiced Latte, you gotta give yourself the go-ahead to actually sit and enjoy that hot cup of steamy foam without the pressure (hopefully) of there being any assignments attached to it for once… and you’ll get it in a for-here-cup, damn it. You’ve earned it.
If you’re lucky this fall break, you’ll find a spot that’s really getting into that fall bucket list spirit, complete with pumpkin patch, hayride, and more. Regardless of hayride (if you’re going, dude, that’s awesome if not…then yeah, of course, too scratchy, I get it), drag your roommate down to the nearest pumpkin patch, high five a scarecrow and find the best pumpkin you can get your hands on.
This goes along with the theme of needing to be somewhere with actual weather in order to experience it, but you’ve gotta experience the feeling of walking through some good ol’ fashioned crunchy autumn leaves. We won’t come after you if you don’t do it in some nice new boots, but you might feel better if you do. I’m pretty sure it’s the law.
When it’s a chilly day out, there’s nothing better than setting yourself down to have a nice hearty bowl of soup (…except maybe also chili. Hmm…). Do yourself a favor and branch out the next time you go to Trader Joes or your local supermarket and stock up. This, and a slice of grilled cheese? Can’t go wrong.
Fall is the time to allow yourself to splurge and get another sweater. You might be saying to yourself that you don’t need another sweater….that actually, the ten sweaters you already have are just fine… but then you see her: another cream-colored chunky knit beauty that’s probably less than fifty bucks. Oh goodness.
You can Marie Kondo your closet later, this definitely sparks joy.
Christmas may be just around the corner, but it’s not here yet…treat yourself to a spicy autumn candle or two (and, okay, you can be a Christmas one, too). Whether you’re back at home or in your dorm, candles can really help you center yourself when you’re feeling anxious or homesick or just really want your space to smell nice again. If you can’t have candles in your space (some dorms are like that) never fear: there are plenty of other ways to spice up your life. Scented reeds and sticks are another fire-hazardless way to make your room smell like an autumnal wonderland. (Another way is to simply not light the candle, of course, but to each their own.)
