I always like to say I made a grand entrance into the world. I have an identical twin sister. But in the 1980’s when my mom Went into labor, they thought they were only coming home with one baby, not two. Before Ultrasounds were a common thing, and before insurance covered them my mom unexpectedly gave birth to twins. SURPRISE! Twins run in my family. My dad had twin cousins growing up and my cousin had twins when i was just 15. So it’s always a fun mixture to see. I love being a twin and wouldn’t trade it for anything. But there are many Pros and Cons to being twins.
People who get to know twins the best, such as family, or really good friends, are quick to notice the individual personalities. Twins might have some connections that are always interesting to witness, like finishing each other’s sentences. But the truth is, that happens to really close friends who spend all their time together. Each twin is their own person. Usually having different tastes in clothes, music and hobbies. My sister and I are very different. I chose my career in the arts and she chose the medical field. She loves country music. I tend to like jazz, classical and pop.
We call each other weekly or daily depending. I always have a friend. If i need to call and vent, she is there. If i have a question, she is there. We love hanging out together, especially when we are adults. It doesn’t happen as often now, so it feels extra special. We always have had the same friends. Throughout childhood, High school, even now. Back in High school, if we would get in a big fight, usually one of us would make a sacrifice of not going out with friends because we couldn’t stand being around each other at the time. Still, if one of us shows up without the other we get questions as to why the other one couldn’t come. It’s an interesting thing to have in a group friendship.
Just the other day I was in the lobby of a theater starting at what I thought was my friend sitting there, when i realized it couldn’t be her, but instead her twin sister. We ended up having an amusing conversation of all the awkward encounters of people mistaking us for our twin. People come up to me all the time and ask how my Husband “Joe” is doing. That’s my sisters husband. My own family members have taken to not mix up me and my sister, but now they mix up our husbands. If its a stranger who asks me that, Then i have to decide if take the time to explain that I’m not married to Joe, or just say “he’s doing great and has been busy with work”. Is it worth explaining it? Some people don’t know or believe that I have a twin and some feel extra embarrassed when they mix us up. It HAPPENS all the time. I have plenty of friends who are twins and I mix them up too.
I think my favorite part of being a twin is that is a really special bond. I don’t know what i would would do without her. We laugh and talk and fight all the time. She has a daughter now and it is so fun to see her daughters reaction to us. She knows which one is mommy, but sometimes she has to rethink it before she decides. I personally am excited and awestruck when I come across twins. I get excited like i know a secret that nobody else knows. That secret is that they have a friend for life and are going to love it!
