The Oscars: The Best Red Carpet Looks Over The Past Decade

Come Oscars Sunday, one of the major talking points besides who will win are the Star’s Red Carpet Looks! Each year at The Oscars, various media outlets publish their best and worst dressed lists. Past ceremonies have featured some of the most iconic (whether it be bad or good) Oscars Red Carpet Looks of all time from Michelle Williams’s Saffron Vera Wang Dress to Björk’s Swan Dress to Hilary Swank”s Navy Blue Guy Laroche Dress to Halle Berry’s Elie Saab Net Dress, to name a few.

Heading into The 92nd Academy Awards (and the first Oscars ceremony of the 2020s) this coming Sunday, here are 10 of The Best Oscars Red Carpet Looks Over The Past Decade:

1. Natalie Portman at The 84th Academy Awards (2012):

Having won The Best Actress Oscar the previous year, Portman returned for The 84th Academy Awards Ceremony in 2012 to present the Best Actor Award (which went to Jean Dujardin for his role in The Artist). For The 2012 Oscars Ceremony, the actress opted to wear a vintage 1954 polka-dot detailed gown by Christian Dior with a diamond collar necklace. The color of the gown was red and the polka dots were black.

In terms of the best Oscars Red Carpet Looks of all time, Portman’s at The 84th Academy Awards is highly underrated. It is also one of my favorite Oscars Red Carpet Looks of the 2010s.

2. Jennifer Garner at The 90th Academy Awards (2018):

Another one of my personal favorite Oscars Red Carpet Looks from the last decade includes Jennifer Garner’s at The 90th Academy Awards. The actress turned heads in a bright, cobalt blue Atelier Versace gown, which she paired with matching Versace shoes and Piaget Jewelry. Garner’s dress definitely ranked high amongst the Best Dressed at The Oscars that year by multiple media outlets.

3. Jennifer Lopez at The 91st Academy Awards (2019):

At last year’s Oscars ceremony, the singer’s long sleeve mirror mosaic gown by Tom Ford was one of the best red carpet looks of the night! Lopez rocked the look with Jimmy Choo heels, Niwaka Jewels, and a Tyler Ellis Clutch.

4. Emma Stone at The 89th Academy Awards (2017):

Just like her Predecessor Brie Larson (See #5 below), Emma Stone not only had one of the Best Red Carpet Looks, but she also won The Best Actress Oscar too! At The 89th Academy Awards Ceremony in 2017, Stone gave us 1920s vibes with her Givenchy haute couture gown, which reportedly required 11 people and 1700 hours to create.

Here’s a fun fact about Emma Stone’s 2017 Oscars Red Carpet Look: Stone’s victory at The Oscars that year made her the first actress to win an Oscar wearing Givenchy since Audrey Hepburn won Best Actress for her role in Roman Holiday at The 26th Academy Awards (held in 1953).

5. Brie Larson at The 88th Academy Awards (2016):

At The 88th Academy Awards Ceremony in 2016, Larson donned an electric blue Gucci Gown with ruffles. She paired the dress with a jeweled belt and simple drop earrings. Larson looked electrifying that night as she took home the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in the film Room

6. Mila Kunis at The 83rd Academy Awards (2011):

Although she got robbed of a Best Supporting Actress Nomination for her performance in Black Swan, Kunis’s lavender lace Elie Saab Haute Couture Gown was not only one of the best and sexiest Oscars Red Carpet Looks of the last decade, but of all time too!

7. Gwyneth Paltrow at The 84th Academy Awards (2012):

When she won The Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Shakespeare in Love at The 71st Academy Awards in 1999, Gwyneth Paltrow wore a pink Ralph Lauren Dress, a dress that is often ranked highly in terms of the greatest Oscar Red Carpet Looks of all time. At the 84th Academy Awards in 2012, Paltrow produced another top-notch red carpet look as she donned a white Tom Ford cape dress, an elegant yet edgy design.

8. Lupita Nyong’o at The 86th Academy Awards (2014):

At The 86th Academy Awards Ceremony, Lupita Nyong’o literally stole the show with her baby blue, custom-made, Prada Gown, which she paired with a Fred Leighton headband. That night, she won The Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in 12 Years A Slave, which also ended up winning Best Picture.

9. Jennifer Aniston at The 85th Academy Awards (2013):

When it comes to wearing red on the red carpet, Jennifer Aniston totally nailed said-look at The 85th Academy Awards in 2013 with her strapless red Valentino gown.

10. Angelina Jolie at The 84th Academy Awards (2012):

One of the most memorable Oscars Red Carpet Looks of the past decade (and all time) belongs to Oscar-Winning Actress Angelina Jolie. Given that her ex-husband Brad Pitt was nominated for Best Actor (for his role in Moneyball), Jolie donned a black velvet strapless Atelier Versace gown with a thigh-high slit that allowed her to show off her right leg to the ceremony.

Jolie made her dress become one of the most memorable Oscars Red Carpet Looks of all time by posing so hard as she walked the red carpet. In addition, as she was presenting The Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay Oscars, she stopped at the microphone for several seconds before presenting the former award with her hand on her hip in order to fully display her right leg again. When the screenwriters of The Descendants took the stage to make their acceptance speeches after winning Best Adapted Screenplay, they mimicked the Oscar-Winning Actress’s pose in an exaggerated fashion. Besides the mockery, Jolie’s dress and leg were trending on Twitter and someone even made a parody Twitter account called ‘Angie’s Right Leg’, which had almost 40,000 followers.

From the past 10 years, what was your favorite Oscars Dress and why? Are there are other Oscars Red Carpet Looks from the past decade that you think should have been included on this list? Be sure to let us know which Red Carpet Looks down below in the comments section!
