Mean Tweets is one of the most popular and favorite recurring segments featured on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. The first-ever segment premiered on the episode that aired on March 22nd, 2012 and has become an instant hit since.
As the name of the recurring segment suggests, each edition of Mean Tweets features various celebrities (some have appeared on more than one edition of the segment) reading aloud actual tweets directed toward them by Twitter users. The song “Everybody Hurts” by R.E.M. is played in the background throughout the entire segment.
The tweets selected for the segment are always abusive, vulgar, or rude, often objecting to the celebrity’s physical appearance or perceived lack of talent and/or athletic abilities (in the cases of athletes taking part in the segment). Some of these tweets also make funny comparisons of celebrities’ resemblances to various things (from other people, animals, objects, etc.) and/or are just random. Each celebrity is then given an opportunity to give a brief response to the mean tweet. Some celebrities’ responses are almost as funny as the mean tweet itself (in some cases even funnier than).
Besides the regular Mean Tweets segment, Jimmy Kimmel Live! has aired special themed editions of the segment as well, which have included NBA, NFL, Music (featuring bands/singers of various genres), and Oscars Editions, to name a few. Usually, Mean Tweets is pre-taped, but on one occasion, the segment was done live with each celebrity participant coming onto the stage to read and respond to his/her mean tweet.
From the 40 editions of Mean Tweets (regular and special themed editions) that have aired so far, here are 11 of the Funniest Mean Tweets ever:
From all 40 editions of Mean Tweets to have aired so far, only two were themed for a specific person. One was for host Jimmy Kimmel where in honor of his 50th birthday, various celebrities read mean tweets about the host from various Twitter users. The only other person to have an entire edition of Mean Tweets dedicated to himself/herself is Former US President Barack Obama. This edition of Mean Tweets aired while he was still in office and personally, this mean tweet was the best one.
It should be illegal to tweet anything mean about Friends Star Lisa Kudrow. She’s someone who I’d definitely love to hang out with on the weekend. What makes this Mean Tweet gold is her explosive laughter, which will make you succumb into laughter as well!
The Oscar-Winning Actress was the first celebrity featured on the Oscars Edition of Mean Tweets, which aired during the 89th Academy Awards telecast on February 26th, 2017. Coincidentally, Jimmy Kimmel was the host of The Oscars that year.
What makes this mean tweet funny is that after Portman (who also a nominee that year for Best Actress) finished reading the tweet, she showed off her heavily pregnant stomach. At the time, Portman was heavily pregnant with her second child and famously didn’t attend the Oscars Ceremony, citing her due date as the reason why. However, it wasn’t revealed a little over a week after the Oscars took place that the real reason why Portman didn’t go was that she gave birth to her second child (a girl named Amalia) on February 22nd, five days before The Oscars that year.
The 3-time NBA Champion with The Golden State Warriors is one of several celebrities who have been on multiple editions of Mean Tweets. His mean tweet on the third NBA Edition of Mean Tweets was extremely funny. Looking at side-by-side photos of Green and Donkey, the 3-time NBA-Star does have a striking resemblance to Eddie Murphy’s character from the Shrek films!
The NBA Hall of Famer is one of several celebrities who have been featured in more than one segment of Mean Tweets on Jimmy Kimmel Live! The one he read out loud on the second NBA Edition of Mean Tweets was epic! If you ever heard Mutumbo speak, his voice sounds just like Cookie Monster!
The actress’s comeback “You must have a really bleached a**hole” to her mean tweet was epic and genius!
The NBA Champion with the Boston Celtics was one of several figures from the NBA who took park in the first- ever NBA Edition of Mean Tweets. The segment aired on June 9th, 2013.
From everyone featured on the first NBA Edition of Mean Tweets, Rondo’s Mean Tweet, which highlighted his resemblance to the titular character from the children’s show Franklin on Nick Jr., was by far the funniest and had me on the floor! Looking at side-by-side photos (see below) of Rondo (who now plays for The Los Angeles Lakers) and Franklin The Turtle, one can see the resemblance between the two.
Not only was this the funniest tweet from the fifth NBA Edition of Mean Tweets, the 2017-18 NBA MVP’s face after reading it was priceless!
The edition of Mean Tweets that was part of the Jimmy Kimmel Live! episode that aired on February 7th, 2014, is in my opinion, the funniest one! There could have easily been four or five tweets from that edition alone that could have ended up on this list. In order to get more of a variety, I am including only two (this one and the one ranked as #1) and one of them is the one that Actor John Goodman read.
While this one is hilarious, here’s a piece of advice: if you show this edition of Mean Tweets to anyone, don’t be eating any food (especially popcorn!) while watching the clip on Youtube!
This is one of several Mean Tweets on this list where both the actual tweet and the celebrity’s response were both extremely funny! The Modern Family Star’s tweet was already hilarious, but her response “What’s wrong with having a d**k in my mouth?” made this mean tweet 1000 times funnier!
In honor of the Jimmy Kimmel-Matt Damon feud, avid Jimmy Kimmel Live! fans probably know which Mean Tweet I’m ranking as #1! Traditionally, the Mean Tweets that celebrities read on the segment are one from random Twitter users. However, on the Mean Tweets Segment that aired on February 7th, 2014, the tweet that Damon (who was the last celebrity featured on that edition) read out loud came from his nemesis Jimmy Kimmel’s Twitter Account!
What makes this tweet even more hilarious is that as the Oscar Winner is reading the tweet, viewers can see Kimmel standing in the background (see the clip below) and mouthing every word. This is also one of the most notable incidents in the entirety of the Jimmy Kimmel-Matt feud, which has been going on since 2003, the same year that Jimmy Kimmel Live! began airing.
