The Essential Guide To Hair Extension

Thinking about getting hair extensions? Here is all the information you’ll need before deciding on whether or not to go for it.

1. Figure out what type of extension you want

There are three main types of extension that salons usually offer, that is micro-ring extensions, tape-in extensions and pre-bonded extensions. These all offer different pros and cons in terms of how long they last, quality and effect on the hair.

If you’re looking for an extension that will damage your hair the least, the best option to go for is probably tape-ins, as they put the least strain on the hair. These extensions lie flat on your head so will blend in well with even the finest of hair. They are also quick to apply and often a bit cheaper than the other extension types. The only downside is that they don’t last that long, usually around two months before you need to get them redone.

You could otherwise opt for micro ring extensions, which hold your hair extensions to your head through a bond which is pushed through a micro ring then pushed together. It sounds more complicated than it is. The perks of this type of extensions include that it lasts a long time (usually about 3 months), they are a lot more secure than tape-ins, and they don’t damage your hair as there is no glue and no chemicals involved. They also blend extremely well and do not fall out of place so you won’t have to worry about styling as much. The only downside is that they are slightly more expensive than tape-ins and some argue that the weight of the micro rings damage your hair (however hair fibre is extremely strong and in my opinion very unlikely to break with such minimal weight).

Finally, there is also the option of pre-bonded extensions. These use glue and a heat gun to apply the hair to your scalp. These usually last a very long time (4-6 months) and do not require any extra maintenance appointments in order to keep them looking natural and secured. However, there are many downsides, the fact that this method uses heat and glue will damage your hair, and unlike other extensions, they cannot be reused, and when taken out the hairdresser must use an acetone solution (a harsh chemical) which will further damage your hair.

2. Decide what quality of hair you’re getting

When getting extensions you’ll be offered the choice of several different hair types. For example, it could be Russian hair, Brazilian hair or European hair. Some will be more expensive than others and this is because of the quality of the hair, while more high-quality extensions are a better option for those with finer hair, girls with thicker hair are more likely to get away with cheaper quality hair as they will be more likely to blend seamlessly. The higher quality the hair the longer it will last as well, with more high-quality extensions lasting up to sixteen months.

3. Decide your length

The longer you get the more it will cost, but it’s actually not always worth it. One of the biggest giveaways with hair extensions is if you are wearing extensions that are too long for you. This will look unnatural on hair that is very fine and short as the hair will suddenly decrease in thickness after it reaches the end of your natural hair. For a more blended look, I would recommend going for a shorter style if you’re hair is on the finer side.

4. What quantity of extensions do you want?

Also take into consideration whether you are getting extensions for length or volume, if you’re looking simply to add more volume to your hair I’d recommend getting half a head or 3/4 of a head (for longer natural hair) of extensions. While if you’re looking for the full glam long look a full head of extensions will do you well.

Hair extensions are a great and fun way to change up your look but it’s important to do your research before getting them! Have you ever had extensions? Let us know in the comments below!
