The Easiest Classes To Take At Slippery Rock University Of Pennsylvania
Many students come to college with the expectation of making gains in their social life, no surprise there. However, what comes as a surprise to most students is what they gain in the area of life interests when they take new classes at college. I have yet to find a class at Slippery Rock University that I would call easy when it comes to amount of time and energy invested. But for me, I would say that an “easy” class is a class that I didn’t mind working hard for because it was interesting. So here is a list of “easy” classes at SRU that you don’t want to miss! Anthropology Classes with Dr. Casson
If you’re a human, then this is the class for you. If you’re an animal, then this is the class for you. This is the only class where you get to spend an hour studying every single idiosyncrasy about yourself (disturbing or not). If you ask anyone at The Rock about the Anthropology program, you will hear about Aksel Casson, the Universities’ very own Indiana Jones (but better dressed), saving every bored college student from another bland hour of academia. With him as your guide, you will pick apart all the things about yourself that make you unique and learn to value them. You will get to touch real bones. You will get to hear about Turkey. When it comes down to it, Anthro is a class that is interesting, useful, and teaches you to appreciate all that you are, which is a beautiful masterpiece.
Shakespeare with Dr. Pitard
You’ve seen My Fair Lady and worshiped at the feet of Audrey Hepburn, so I’m sure you think you know all there is to know about The Bard. But take a class with Dr. Pitard in the English Department at SRU and you will spend every Shakespearean moment in laughter. You’ve never met anyone so tall and so passionate about the Renaissance period in your life. Somehow, he makes Shakespeare’s sonnets make sense. And somehow, he always ends up blurting out curse words when describing Old English. Oh, and make sure you take his class in the winter term, so you can see his colorful array of sweaters; they sure to put a smile on your face every time you walk into classroom.
Introduction to Music with Dr. Utsch
It may sound simple, but this class at Slippery Rock University comprised some of my most peaceful moments at SRU. I mean, where else can you listen to an old recording of monks chanting? Where else are you instructed to memorize symphonies? No where else but this class in the music department. With over 100 students, this large class size takes the pressure off of you, so you can sit back and appreciate the gift of music. Perhaps appreciation of the arts is the first step in achieving Enlightenment? I’m not sure, but you can always ask Dr. Utsch.
Literary and Cultural Theory with Dr. Barta-Smith
You always say you’re going to read Virginia Woolf and buy a “Feminist” t-shirt. You always say you’re going to ponder Marxist theories whilst contemplating the plight of the worker after your 12-hour shift. When you take Literary and Cultural Theory with Dr. Barta-Smith, you can finally find the time to read all of the people you hear about. The material is deep. Dr. Barta-Smith is a freaking genius. And you are sure to enjoy hearing her lecture. Finally, you can tell your parents that the money they spent paying for you to go to college wasn’t wasted, just quote some Plato and tell them you’ll be in your cave.
Intercultural Communication with Dr. Pease-Hernandez
Where else can you find a Professor who has purple-dyed hair? Her name is Dr. Pease-Hernandez and she’s small but beastly. What I love about this class is that you can visit all around the world, meet new cultures, and learn why your new neighbors from Japan look at you weird when you try to communicate with them, all in the same class. She approaches communication with a pragmatic attitude that is refreshing and practical in its everyday application. In other words, you get her, and she gets you. There is no one who won’t like this class at Slippery Rock University. Take it and see for yourself.
Microeconomics, with any of the Professors and Student Tutors (you’re sure to need) .
This class at Slippery Rock University is like that new puppy you just adopted. It’s difficult but at the end of the day you’re glad it’s in your life. For most of us, the only thing we know about the economy is that we want it to work in our favor in the form of a well-paying job. But you learn so many valuable things in this class. I learned that the government is on the side of small farmers, paying them to keep things running. I learned that “opportunity cost” could be applicable to every area of my life. In other words, you learn a lot that you can take with you after the class is over. Plus, you get to put it on your transcript, which makes you look smart and academically diversified.
So really, it’s just a good idea to remember that in the middle of parties, roommates, and term papers, you are learning something you can take with you. You’re meeting professors who are pretty great at what they do. You’re becoming a better version of yourself to take back into the world. So don’t forget to celebrate you. That’s what a Rock Solid Education inspires.
