Barcelona is a beautiful city full of fascinating history, unique Catalan culture, delicious gastronomy, stunning beaches, buzzing ‘plazas’ and so much more. It truly is a remarkable city to visit. But what I love so much about Barcelona that make it so special is the number of stunning viewpoints dotted around the city, each one giving their own screenshot of the breath-taking Barcelona skyline. Here is a concise guide to the coolest places to go if you want the best views of Barcelona.
The Bunkers are well-known and loved by Barcelona locals, but still seem to be a hidden gem for tourists. They’re definitely one of Barcelona’s best kept secrets. The Bunkers are located 262 metres up, at the top of Turó de la Rovira in the Carmel neighbourhood and were originally built as an anti-aircraft defence mechanism for the Spanish Civil War in 1937, as a viewpoint to survey the entirety of the city and protect Barcelona from further bombing. Nowadays, it acts as one of the best viewpoints to marvel in all of Barcelona’s sun-drenched glory. I would recommend heading up to the Bunkers to watch the sunset with a picnic and a bottle of wine. Oh, and remember to wear sensible shoes, it’s a bit of a walk!
The rooftop bar on top of the Museu d’Historia de Catalunya is truly marvellous. Here, you can get stunning views of Port Vell and watch the boats sail in and out throughout the day. The bar is free entry but drinks are quite pricey, but it is definitely worth it for the amazing atmosphere and beautiful sea view. This is definitely one to opt for if you are looking for somewhere to go for classy drinks and a buzzing atmosphere.
Another amazing spot to head to if you want flawless views of Barcelona are the steps outside the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya which is located on the hills of Montjuic. From here you can see Plaza Espanya and Tibidabo cathedral in all its glory. If you go during the evening, you might even be able to watch the Magic Fountain show from here which is truly epic (you can see the timetable here).
This one may sound slightly odd, but hear me out. Just outside of the cemetery on Montjuic is a lovely viewpoint with a line of benches where you can sit and take in the spectacular views of Barcelona. This viewpoint is known to very few people which makes it feel really special and secluded. You can also see the airport from here so can watch the planes go in and out. It really is a unique spot that you should definitely visit if you are in Barcelona.
Tibidabo is a must-see if you are visiting Barcelona. Overlooking the city, the mountain is home to the spectacular Sagrat Cor church and adjacent Tibidabo Amusement Park which you can get to using the Tibidabo Funicular or buses from Placa Catalunya. If you visit Tibidabo you will also be able to see breathtaking panoramic views of the city, with landmarks such as the Sagrada Familia and the W Hotel jutting out from the skyline.
If you’re not afraid of heights, you should definitely take a ride on the cable car overlooking Port Vell. The cable car will take you from Montjuic to the seaside suburb of Barceloneta while offering you stunning views of the sea, famous port and Montjuic Castle. At 11.43 Euros it is a memorable activity that will give you amazing views without breaking the bank.
