Closet decluttering should be at the top of your spring cleaning to-do list. Does it look as if a tornado just tore through your closet? There’s no longer room for a messy closet in this house. Going through your closet is such a productive way to spend your time, and you might even enjoy the process. After the job is done, you’ll start to feel your life coming together, all thanks to a clean closet. Say goodbye to those stressful mornings spent searching for a sweater, better days are coming!
Start by pulling everything out of your closet, and I mean everything. It’s so much easier to work from a blank space rather than trying to work around your closet. Pull out your sweaters, jeans, sneakers, boots, scarves, jackets, belts, need I go on? Clear it out so you can take on the task in confidence, without becoming overwhelmed.
Once everything is out of your closet, you’ll look around and realize your bedroom is now an absolute disaster. Don’t stress! Pick one corner of the mess to start in, and work your way around it. You’ll need three bins so you can neatly create three different piles; “keep,” “come back to” and “give away/sell.” Say you pick up your favorite sweater, you’ll definitely want to save that, so you toss it in the “keep” bin. How about that pair of jeans you love but find you never really wear. Not sure what to do? Throw it in the “come back to” pile and make your decision at the end of your decluttering process. If you find something you know you’ll never wear again, toss it in the “give away/sell” bin. This will help you clear up space in your closet and figure out what you need vs. what you don’t.
I love to hang clothing on hangers because it allows me to easily see and pick out my clothes without creating a mess. If you’re like me, you’re going to need a lot of hangers to get this job done. If you don’t already have a rack in your closet, you’re going to need to get one ASAP and hang it up. Depending on the size of your closet, I recommend pushing the rack off to one side, or for larger closets, put one on each side leaving space for shelving in the middle. Hang up a majority of your clothes, such as blouses, jeans, dress pants, dresses/rompers, etc.
These will save your life. I use storage bins for the entire bottom half of my closet. There are a variety of bins that will get your closet organized, but my favorite is the rolling carts. For each drawer in the cart, designate a certain clothing item to each. For example, the top two drawers for bras and underwear, the middle two for pajamas and sweats, and the bottom two for swimwear and activewear. If you keep extra blankets, pillows, or other bed accessories in your closet as well, store those away in plain large bins and push them off to the side or in the back corner of your closet. Labeling these large bins is also extremely helpful when going back to look for them.
Are your shoes just thrown all over the floor of your closet? Do you struggle to find a pair of matching shoes? If you have room in your closet for a shoe rack, you need one that lines the floor. If you don’t have the extra space, you’ll need a hanging shoe rack. These will keep your heels, boots, sneakers, any type of shoe together so you’ll never have to stress about losing half of your pair. You can choose from long one-shelf racks or taller racks with multiple shoe-shelves. Whichever you chose, they’re affordable and clear up space in your closet.
Stick on hooks are so helpful when trying to save space in your closet. I like to keep my entire wardrobe together, even if that includes bringing my robe and shower towels into my closet. Place two or three hooks on the inside of your closet door to hang up any items that you don’t feel the need to place on hangers. Examples of this can be your bathrobe, shower towels, your go-to jacket, or your favorite purses. Hooks are so cheap and will transform your closet.
Keeping a junk box in your closet is great for those random objects you never know where to put. I keep my junk box on the top shelf of my closet, out of sight but in reach if needed. Junk boxes can be filled with really anything you choose. Extension cords, thumbtacks, old photos, anything that you know you might need one day can be thrown in here. If you want to get really organized, get multiple small boxes and label each “electronics,” “photos,” “random”, etc. Label them for easier navigation through your closet.
A clean, neat room can be ruined at the sight of an overflowing laundry hamper. To avoid this, I keep my laundry hamper in my closet. Place your hamper in the corner of your closet, to keep it out of the way of your clean clothes and storage. To keep this looking extra organized, get a hamper with a lid so you can easily hide your dirty clothes.
Where do you store all of your scarves and belts? One accessory that I think every closet needs is a loop-scarf hanger. These are so convenient because they save you so much space and allow easy access to your scarves, belts, and any other accessories you want to hang. They’re super cheap and a great addition to any closet! Click here to order yours.
