The worst feeling is being bored and not feeling like you have anything to do. Knowing you have a lot of free time ahead of you can make you feel antsy even by the end of day one. Since you are home because of a shut-down college and you’re in mandated quarantined or choosing to self-quarantine, there’s always something better to do then binge-watching The Office for the 1,000th time (@ me). Quit saying “I’m bored” and try one of these suggestions for the best things to do when you feel like you have nothing to do.
If you’re looking to kick it old school and make someone’s day, write a letter or card and send to your family or friends. No matter how many phone calls I make to my grandma, she things it is so thoughtful and wonderful when I send her a handwritten letter or card. It doesn’t have to fancy stationary or expensive card, just use what you have at home and send some love!
If you are like me and as soon as you get bored, you think of ways to change your appearance, try dying your hair a fun color! Using hair chalk or a temporary dye, either add some colorful highlights or heck, dye your whole head the whole color- you’ve got some time on your hands to let the color fade out!
Pamper yourself a little and give yourself a DIY manicure/pedicure treatment! Give your feet a soak in a hot tub, make a homemade scrub and paint your nails a fun color! Since you have nothing else to do, get creative and try some fun nail art you’ve always wanted to try but have never had time to do! Make sure to share a snap of your nails once you’re done!
If you’re bored because of a shut-down college situation, make sure to keep in touch with friends and family! Obviously, if you are home with your parents, give someone else a call but keep in mind if you are out of your parent’s house, they always love the chance to catch up with you! There’s something so fun about talking to someone on the phone and if you add a pair of headphones, you can do other things while you chat. Give your friends from school a call and before you know it, you won’t be bored!
Disney+ is the best thing to come out of last year and thanks to quarantine, Disney is releasing movies and shows early so you have something new and fun to watch! Most notably, Frozen 2 was released early and rumor is, season 2 of The Mandalorian might be released early as well! While you may have already been doing this before your shut-down college sent you home, it is still a perfect option to beat boredom. Grab some popcorn, soda (or wine) and a blanket and snuggle in to watch a classic movie, a new favorite or binge any old Disney Channel show from your childhood. It’s a win/win that will make you nostalgic and feel warm and fuzzy inside while beating boredom.
Some of my favorite hairstyles have been born out of feeling like I had nothing to do. Learn a new braid, a fancy updo or find your new go-to hairstyle. Check out YouTube for step by step tutorials to help you get the look, for inspiration, and for ideas. Not into trying new hair-dos? Find some hair-fail videos to make you laugh! Make sure to share a photo of your final look to show off to your friends!
Get creative and turn your living room/bedroom/bathroom into a studio and take some Insta-worthy photos. Taking photos at home is a lot easier than at your shut-down college dorm! Whether you use a nice camera or just your phone, by using simple things like curtains, blankets or sheets, you can make a fun background to take photos in front of. Check out Pinterest for ideas and see what you can replicate!
Complain about your shut-down college, working from home or just being plain ole bored by making some funny videos for Tik Tok! Try the newest dance trend, find audio clips that crack you up or take videos of you and your dog, the options are endless and worst case, you can just scroll through all the content! Make sure to check out the discover page to see what is trending and to give you ideas of what kind of videos you should make!
Take advantage of not being in a shut-down college dorn and pretend you’re on The Great British Bake Off! This is one of my guilty pleasures but I often don’t have enough time to dedicate to actually baking and decorating a yummy dessert. Try making something super creative or something you’ve never made before. YouTube and Pinterest are both great resources for how-tos and inspiration for what to bake and how to decorate like a pro! My goal for the next few weeks is to make my own bread! There are so many kinds and recipes to try, I’ll never feel bored!
Finally, this is my favorite thing to do at all times of day, no matter if I have something to do or not. Whether you head to Instagram, YouTube or Tik Tok, there are endless (I mean ENDLESS) amounts of dog videos you can watch to pass the time. I have a Corgi/German Sheperd mix so I tend to look up dog videos involving those kinds of dogs but I also love just looking for a good compilation! If you need somewhere or a breed to start, try huskies! They are loud, sassy and love making crazy noises. It is sure to keep you entertained for a while!
