Do you ever get a sudden feeling of warmth and fondness in your guy when you catch a brief glimpse or hear a song from a show you watched as a child? We all have those kids’ shows that instantly transports us back to our childhood.
If you’re in the mood for reminiscing, here are some of the best kids’ shows to revisit:
The award-winning Avatar: The Last Airbender is considered one of the best children’s animated television series of all time. The popular show sprouted a sequel series, The Legend of Korra, as well as a live-action feature film called The Last Airbender (which was not well received…by anyone.) Avatar: The Last Airbender comprised of three seasons and aired from 2005 to 2008 on the Nickelodeon. It’s now easier than ever to revisit your favorite childhood series, as it’s streaming on both Netflix and Amazon Prime!
The series centers around Aang; the current Avatar and last surviving member of the Air Nomads. Aang has the unique ability to harness the power to bend the four primary elements: air, water, earth, and fire. Aang is joined by his friends, Sokka, Katara, and Toph, and together they try to end the imperialist war waged by Fire Nation.
The character Arthur the Aardvark was first featured in a popular children’s book series written Marc Brown. When it was developed into a TV show in the late 90s it quickly became a national PBS phenomenon. Arthur now has over 240 episodes and 25 seasons to date — although there have been hiatuses over the years, the series is still on the air.
Arthur was at its most popular in the 2000s, and it covered some serious topics — dyslexia, asthma, cancer, and more — all in a kid-friendly way. Just listening to the incredibly catchy theme song (listen here) will hit you with an instant wave of nostalgia.
That’s So Raven… it’s the future I can see.
That’s So Raven is a delightful comedy about family and friendship — with a twist. Teenager Raven Baxter has the supernatural ability to see into the future. Raven uses this ability and her expert fashion skills, to get herself, her family, and her friends out of all kinds of amusing situations.
That’s So Raven was massively popular in its time — and it still is. It was the first Disney Channel series to have more than 100 episodes and even prompted a sequel, Raven’s Home, which is still airing.
Two ordinary children, Emmy and Max, are whisked away to the magical Dragon Land after coming into possession of an enchanted dragon scale. They quickly befriend four lively and exuberant dragons: Ord, Cassie, Zak, and Wheezie.
Dragon Tales is one of the kids’ shows you probably forgot about, making it a great show to reminisce about.
Remember when we all wanted to grow a mermaid tale and be just like the girls from H20? First airing in Australia, the hit show H20: Just Add Water was soon televised in more than 120 countries around the world.
H20: Just Add Water begins with three teenage girls, Rikki, Emma, and Cleo, accidentally getting stranded on Mako Island. When a full moon illuminates a pool under a dormant volcano, where the girls are swimming, they are (unknowingly) transformed into mermaids. After escaping and returning to their ordinary lives they don’t think much of it — that is until they come in contact with water. The three girls suddenly grow mermaid tails! Their lives are anything but normal as they struggle to conceal their magical abilities while dealing with the everyday shenanigans of being teenage girls.
Featuring a magical school for fairies, a band of evil witches, and multiple dimensions; the animated hit show Winx Club first premiered on an Italian network in 2004. Later adapted for Nickelodeon, various adaptations of Winx Club are still airing to this day. In fact, a live-action adaptation of the show is set to come out on Netflix in the near future!
The show follows six fairies — Bloom, Stella, Flora, Musa, Tecna, and Aisha — who form the Winx Club, a magical group that fights villains. Their main foes are Icy, Stormy, and Darcy: a trio of witches named the Trix.
The popular Canadian-American PBS kids’ show Cyberchase is all about math–and saving the world, of course. Three children from Earth–Jackie, Matt, and Inez–find themselves suddenly in a new digital world, Cyberspace, where they are tasked with the mission to protect the world from the evil villain Hacker. With the help of their sidekick, the ‘cybird’ Digit, they outwit Hacker using the power of mathematics.
Cyberchase is definitely a blast from the past and will hit you with all the nostalgia feels.
Adapted from the popular book series by Stan and Jan Berenstain, The Berenstain Bears was one of the most heartwarming PBS kids’ shows of the early 2000s. Little known fact — Michael Cera voiced Brother Bear for the first two seasons!
This Canadian series follows the everyday lives of the Berenstain family. Each of their adventures culminates with a life lesson about safety or moral values. Watching this nostalgic kids’ show will take you on a brief and fun trip down memory lane!
Lizzie McGuire is one of the most iconic kids’ shows of the 2000s. In fact, it has a reboot in the works which will feature the majority of the original cast!
Lizzie McGuire has a simple yet enjoyable premise — a thirteen-year-old girl named Lizzie navigates the challenges of being a middle schooler with the help of her two best friends, Miranda and Gordo. The inclusion of a small animated Lizzie (revealing the thoughts and feelings of Lizzie herself) makes the show unique and vibrant. From the classic early 2000s fashion to annoying little brothers and obnoxious mean girls, Lizzie McGuire is a perfect storm of 2000s nostalgia.
