Although Christmas is a time for family and turkey dinner lots of us like to go travelling or on holiday, there is nothing better than to go see how different cultures celebrate the festive holidays. Europe is majority Christian so pretty much anywhere you go you’ll be surrounded by sugar canes, mistletoe and Christmas trees. Here are a few of the best destinations for Christmas in Europe this year.

1. Germany

I mean this list would be all wrong if Germany wasn’t put right at the top, even worse if it wasn’t on this list of destinations for Christmas in Europe. When it comes to Germany they know how to do Christmas right, if you’re looking for a whole lot of Christmas spirit then this has to be your go to place. You can go anywhere in the country and never be too far away from an extravagant Christmas market. They sell everything from Christmas scented candles to hot dogs so you’ll never get bored at one.

2. Poland

Christmas in Poland is considered a sacred holiday in which they have a set of traditions which they follow, if you want a traditional Christmas then Poland is the place to go. What’s even better is that they welcome guests into their house to eat with them because they believe “a guest in the home is God in the home” which is an amazing tradition to have. Why not try some amazing Polish traditional Christmas food like beet soup or honey cake known as piernik.

If you’re looking for destinations for Christmas in Europe a little closer to the UK then Belgium is the perfect place to spend your Christmas. Spend a weekend in Bruges just before Christmas to get all your essential Christmas things like great Belgium chocolate considering Bruges is chocolate capital. But aside from the chocolate Bruges is a medieval city which is guaranteed to bring back your Christmas spirit.

4. Netherlands

If you are looking for a white Christmas then the Netherlands is the place to be, in particular Amsterdam. You can go to an ice skating rink in Amsterdam which they have on every year around Christmas or see the beautiful lights festive or even see a Christmas circus which includes some of the best acts from around the world.

5. England

London during Christmas is a magical place to be and if you live in the UK and haven’t been then what on earth are you waiting for? It’s the time when everyone is wrapped up warm, coffee in hand and going to the Christmas market. But also Birmingham and Manchester are amazing places to visit to the lead up to Christmas, sure saying Birmingham is a little biased because I live there but you will think so too when you see the amazing and beautiful German market.

Vienna is the place to be this Christmas for everyone, whether you’re looking for a fashion capital, beautiful architecture or a city rooted to it’s history with medieval buildings and amazing churches, Vienna has it all. But this beautiful city just gets more beautiful around winter when there are Christmas lights hung everywhere and Christmas markets to fall in love with.

7. Iceland

Even though there is as little as five hours of daylight in Iceland during winter that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun during the festive season. If you want to get closer to nature this Christmas then Iceland is the perfect place to go, you can go hiking on glaciers and it’s the perfect time to see the majestic Northern Lights. Why not head to one of the most religious cities in the world, home of the pop himself… Rome. Walk down the cold streets of Rome wrapped up warm and stopping at cafes for a hot drink. If Rome isn’t your thing then why not visit Florence during Christmas where you can attend a midnight Mass or browse the Christmas markets.

9. Scotland

I’ll be the first to admit that the weather isn’t so great and if you live in the UK (especially the south) then a long drive up or even a long train ride in the cold doesn’t sound appealing but honestly it’s worth it. There are quite a few Christmas markets and street of light to visit in Edinburgh or see the magnificent Christmas tree  in Princes Square Glasgow.
