Studying Abroad is arguably one of the most influential experiences one can have in college, and if you have the opportunity to do so, you should take it. The chance to become immersed in different cultures helps you grow academically and personally. There are so many amazing cities to visit while you are there, so here is a list of 10 of the best cities to visit as a study abroad student
One of the more obvious choices, Paris is a must see when spending time abroad. Rich in history and culture, you won’t be bored. Eat a crepe by the Eiffel Tower, immerse yourself in art at Le Louvre, or stroll down the beautiful Avenue des Champs-Élysées. There is not a shortage of sightseeing to do in this city. You can take a day trip to Versailles or simply wander the city to shop or visit museums.
As one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world, Amsterdam feels like a complete Utopia. Not only is the food absolutely incredible, but the city itself is unbelievably picturesque. Whether you visit the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, the Keukenhof Gardens, or the I Amsterdam sign behind the Rijksmuseum you will not be disappointed. Not to mention, the canals are breathtaking, so get out there and explore-just don’t get run over by the bicyclists!
Belgium’s capital city is not always on tourists’ must see lists, but it definitely should be. There is a lot of sightseeing to do in this city starting with the Grand Place (or “Grote Markt”), Brussel’s marketplace. It is the center square of the city and is surrounded by guildhalls, the city’s Townhouse, and the King’s Breadhouse. It has also been voted the ‘world’s most beautiful square’. Aside from its architecture, Brussels is also known for its chocolate, beer, and, you guessed it- waffles.
Barcelona is not only known for its incredible nightlife, beaches, and amazing paella. It is also rich in history, and home to art by Antoni Gaudi. The must see buildings are La Sagrada Familia (Gaudi’s unfinished Cathedral), the beautiful and colorful Park Güell, and lastly Casa Milà. Before you leave, don’t forget to check out Barcelona’s big indoor marketplace Mercado de La Boqueria.
Budapest is a tourist hot spot right now and is known to be the “hipster capital of Europe.” It is famous for its nightlife, energy, and beauty. Check out the thermal baths, ruinbars, and castles for an unforgettable experience.
If you love history, live music, and, of course beer, then Dublin should be on your to do list. The city center is very walk-able and always bustling. Visit the Guinness Factory, the Jameson Distillery, Grafton Street, one of the many cathedrals around the city, or hang out in St. Stephen’s Green. End the day listening to live music at a local pub. If you have time you can even take a day trip to the Cliffs of Moher.
Prague is the perfect place to go for a quick trip if you are tight on time, as the whole city can be explored in a day or two. The Old Town Square is beautiful and historic, with lots of restaurants, statues, and memorials. You can also check out the Prague astronomical clock, the lively Charles Bridge, The John Lennon Wall, and St. Vitus Cathedral to name a few.
Get your camera ready! The incredibly romantic “City of Canals” will make you feel as though you are in a fantasy world. The key to exploring Venice is to simply put your map down and wander through the streets. You’ll come across St. Marks Square and the Rialto bridge in no time, not to mention the food is delicious if you get hungry. You can also go for a gondola ride, or visit the surrounding islands, Murano and Burano where you can soak in the colorful houses and Italian culture.
Lisbon has been referred to as “a mirror of a thousand colors.” Visit Alfama, Bairro Alto, and the Belem Tower.
