Jamaican dishes are made with all the soul and love that a human being can possibly emote to another person through delicious food. The best way to win someone’s heart is through food, especially if the person is a food lover.

Down below is a list of 10 delicious dishes that you should definitely try:

1. Jerk Chicken and Pork

When you are marinading the meat, the ingredients includes salt, scotch bonnet peppers and all spice. If you want to jazz it up and smoke the meat, you can include onions, scallions, thyme, black pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg. Jerk wouldn’t be considered jerk without the two major ingredients scotch bonnet peppers and pimento.

A classic Jamaican dish that is very enjoyable.

2. Ackee and Saltfish

This national dish is typically served as a breakfast item. Ackee is a fruit that grows in groups on trees. It is actually important that you know that it poisonous if eaten raw. It should be left to open on its own before it’s harvested and prepared.

3. Stews and Soups

Stewing meat is very popular in Jamaica. After marinating it in all these seasonings such as onions, scallions, hot peppers, the food will start to be stewed down, making it tender. Most stewed dishes are brown stewed chicken, pork, oxtails, beef, and fish.

4. Jamaican Rice and Peas

Rice and peas is a go-to dish for Sunday dinners and traditional holiday meals. It’s a side dish for stewed meals, though some also eat paired with ackee and saltfish and curry dishes.

I love, love, love rice and peas. Practically anything that has rice in it, I will consume gladly. I think that this is one meal that will never get old because rice can get paired with anything.

5. Curry Goat

Goat meat tastes similar to beef but is slightly different. This tender dish is served with white rice and is also a favourite at house gathering meal.

6. Beef Patty

One of the many  Jamaican dishes that has made a name for themeselves in the states, is the Jamaican beef patty is infamous. The beef is seasoned with curry, onion, garlic. The beef is then placed in a buttery dough, in the shape of a moon and baked.

Beef is the original version though patties are now made with chicken, fish, ham and cheese, veggies. When I was younger, I ate these faithfully and still do to this day when I can.

7. Callaloo

Breakfast is usually the heavier meal in Jamaica of the day. The callaloo dish is one of the lighter dishes prepared. For Jamaicans, it’s not a shock to consume curry chicken, brown stew chicken, liver or kidney for breakfast along with fried johnny cakes and potatoes.

8. Sweet Potato Pudding

Sweet potato pudding is a local treasure in Jamaica. It’s considered to as being “hell a top, hell a bottom and hallelujah in the middle”.

This sweet dessert can be served with some ice cream after Sunday dinner. It is cooked in a pot on a stove that has hot coals on the top of the pot.

9. Escoveitch Fish

Festivals and bammy are usually when this fish is being served. This is must try whenever you decide to plan a trip to Jamaica.

The sauce is made up of vinegar, onions, peppers, carrots, and pimento.

10. Mannish Water

The leftover from the goat; the head, testicles and other scraps of the animal are saved to make this popular Jamaican dish. This could be served at a party and an appetizer.
