6 Tartan Outfits That Will Keep You Cozy And Cute This Fall

Tartan has been a fashion favorite decades, because of its versatility in colors, clothing options, and its defining bold pattern. Formelly made from wool, tartan can be made in a variety of fabrics. Tartan can easily be dressed with sophistication, such as for a job interview, or it can worn for an edgier look. This coming fall try these tartan outfits that will keep you cute and cozy!

1. Short Tartan Skirt

Short plaid skirts are one of the most versatile clothing pieces every young woman should own. It’s such a fun piece that can be worn in so many ways! Shorter plaid skirts, like mini skirts are perfect for a sexy, edgy punk look, and pair perfectly with fishnet tights and combat boots. Short plaid skirts are also the staple garment for put-together, preppy outfits, that are more casual.

Mid-length plaid skirts can be worn for a less edgy look, but still adorable with a cardigan or button-down shirt and would be perfectly appropriate for a job interview-especially if paired with tights.

2. Tartan Pants

Plaid pants also come in a variety of styles-from the rocker look with chains, D-rings and patches, the kind of pants you’d expect to pick up at 2003 Hot Topic, to the more casual yet professional plaid slacks that most department stores carry. A pair of plaid slacks are a great way to add visual interest to professional work-attire, when you’re tired of donning plain black dress pants. They also look great with cardigans, jackets and heels of solid colors.

3. Long Tartan Skirt

Long tartan skirts have come and gone in the ways of fashion, but when you can find a long plaid skirt they make such cute outfits. They’re reminiscent of old fashion school outfits from decades past, (think Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz in Beetlejuice). Tartan skirts also go nicely with cardigans, sweaters or button-downs and make for a great cozy outfit in the fall or winter. They’re super sophisticated with their length, but are still very figure flattering. Even Duchess Kate wears long tartan skirts!

5. Plaid Sweater/Cardigan

We’ve mentioned cardigans and sweaters several times, but we haven’t mentioned the possibility of buying them in plaid. While tartan or plaid should be worn with other solid colors, and no contrasting patterns or any additional plaid, as that would be overwhelming, a cardigan with a bold pattern and color choice is an ideal way to add visual interest to an outfit with an otherwise colorless palette. Think black slacks, a plain black or white tee, and a beautiful tartan sweater to complete the look.
