A College experience is like a quinceañera, it really only happens once. You truly have to make the most of the years while you attend. Students are offered a lot of activities to make the educational quest memorable and amazing. And if you’re like me and you’ve watched Pitch Perfect one too many times you’ll be really upset if you didn’t have as much fun as they did. You’ll want to do another 6 plus years of schooling just so you can join a band, play on a sports team, go to a frat party, or enjoy a retreat. So believe me, and participate as much as you can! Here are 12 things you’ll regret not doing at SUNY Empire State College.
Clubs are engaging. They give you focus on a particular topic, field, or experience and allow you to develop expertise in something you’re interested in. Clubs also a great opportunity to build professional relationships because you’ll be hanging out with a bunch of people who support your ideas. Like having your own personal team outside of social media that you can grow with. I would’ve liked to join the Minority Students in Action Club, or the Education for All Club, but just couldn’t manage more than what I already had going on. So, I definitely regret not doing this at SUNY.
SUNY Empire State College is a great school in general, but what also makes them awesome is their attention to student health. The Student Wellness Retreat is a great way to group with other students, enjoy activities, and find out where you are in health. You’ll definitely regret not doing this at Empire State.
Aside from the retreats there are also other college-wide events such as picnics, parks, and other outdoor space activities; as well as art exhibitions and meetings, too. These are great places to show off your learned skills by presenting projects, or just get out of the city and enjoy yourself. If you don’t show up and have a good time at these events, you’ll certainly regret not doing them later.
Even though I’m a remote student, I’ve actually managed to “run into” a few classmates in more than one course, and in more than one term. As a student at SUNY Empire State College it’s very easy to find that you share interests and experiences with other people and turn that into a network of support. I really regret not taking advantage of the opportunities I had to connect with classmates and create professional partners because I need them now!
There are also a lot of sports events at SUNY ESC. They go to games all over, so if you’re into sports it’s a really exciting thing to be out at a game with a community of people and just have a good time.
I don’t know how engaged people get in a classroom because I’m a remote student. But as one, you always have the opportunity to reach out to your professors for support. It was sort of like independent studying for me because I mostly tried to get everything done as best I could on my own. I really regret doing this though. It’s better to get the professors opinion on the topic and ask questions when you need to. That’s what they’re there for! You’ll truly regret not creating a more in-depth relationship with your professors in this way if you don’t.
I don’t know about other people, but college education for me is like candy to a child. Whenever I’m registering for courses, reading all the titles, I feel like I’m shopping in a mall or something. I just wanna try so much! Lol. I’m debating taking up another degree after this one is complete because there’s just so much more I’m interested in and want to know about. If you don’t throw in an extra course or two during your studies, just for pure interest, you’re not colleging properly. And you’ll regret this later on after the experience is over.
This one depends on your field of study I guess, and what the college has to offer. I regret not getting involved in some work at SUNY Empire State College. They were offering roles for writers on the student paper, but at that time I was just not ready to write to a public audience. So I passed up on it. Believe me, if opportunities come up to work at your school, take them. You’ll regret it if you don’t. Don’t feel nervous about participating because everything is a learning experience anyway.
Like I’ve mentioned earlier, I’ve shared classes with the same person pretty often, and have met some really cool people in general. I regret not sharing contact information and building relationships with people I could’ve had things in common with now. Later on when you want to talk about school or work or experiences, or have someone to hang with, they’d be good for that. So try to make as much friends as possible while you’re in college.
When you’re college offers help take it! Don’t struggle your way through studies if it gets rough. There are resources for basically everything at SUNY Empire State College. You can spend more time learning, enlightening yourself, and maintaining your interest if you get the help you need. You’ll definitely regret the struggle if you don’t.
Maybe it’s for you, maybe it’s not, but if you’re a remote student you might want to try some in-person courses. If you don’t you may regret completing an entire degree and never stepping foot in a classroom. 😔😕
Another really important part of college are the career services. A lot of schools have job fairs; services that help you prepare for work like resume building and skill recognition; you can also get help finding jobs that are specifically geared towards students. ESC offers all of these and when you’re nearing the end of your degree and ready to get into the real world past your learnings, you’ll definitely want to take advantage of these opportunities. This is another thing you’ll regret not doing at SUNY Empire State College if you don’t get to it! I know I’m going to soon!
