With Summer almost upon us, you might be wondering how to fill the months ahead. If you have time to spare, a car, and friends or family who are willing to tag along, taking some Summer road trips will ensure you make some unforgettable memories this season. Here are a few California based Summer road trips you won’t want to miss out on.
Located in Northern California, San Francisco is a city that is bound to get you excited. Known for it’s many attractions, unique food, and queer scene, it’s a one-of-a-kind city. Set aside a few days and take the trip up North to explore all that it has to offer. Snap a pic riding it’s famous cable cars, stroll along Fisherman’s Wharf, investigate infamous Alcatraz, and drive along the Golden Gate Bridge. However, this city is notorious for it’s expenses; make sure you save up some money before you decide to go. It’ll be sure to make a lasting impression on you.
San Luis Obispo lies halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, so if you’re unable to commit to those bigger cities, SLO is a safe bet. Famous for it’s agriculture, it’s a sleepy college town based off the coast in rolling green hills. Spend a weekend hiking in the mountains and enjoying it’s scenic views. Head to Downtown SLO for some shopping, or grab drinks at the many bars it hosts and get familiar with the college crowd. A word of advice; hit up High Street Deli for some of the best sandwiches around before you leave. You won’t regret it.
If you want to take a day trip, or are looking to camp out under the stars, Joshua Tree is a safe bet. Based inland a little bit outside of Los Angeles, you’ll be sure to feel like you’re on a different planet in this small town. Take a look at the quirky trees it’s named for in the national park, and grab a bite to eat in the neighboring small town. You’ll feel like you’re in a midwestern movie; it’s a great getaway from everyday life. Make sure you bring copious amounts of sunblock, though, as temperatures can reach the 100s, especially in the midst of Summer.
About an hour and a half away from LA, Santa Barbara is another college town that lies on the coast you won’t want to miss. You’ll get to experience all that Summer has to offer with it’s laid back beach vibes. Head to Isla Vista if you’re looking for a party; UCSB is notorious for it’s college night life. If you want something a bit more sophisticated, hit up Downtown SB and try out some of the many bars and restaurants it’s home to after a day at the beach. Santa Barbara is the perfect place to enjoy good food, drinks, and beaches, and will give you the relaxing getaway you might be looking for.
If you want to immerse yourself in nature and maybe get in a work out or two, Yosemite is the place to be. A little outside of Sacramento, it’s known for it’s spectacular forests and waterfalls. With countless attractions to visit, you won’t be bored if you decide to take a road trip here. Try out river rafting, take a hike, visit some of it’s many waterfalls, or simply soak in the scenery and sun. Take a break from the stressful life of the city and instead enjoy all that nature has to offer in this place that is truly like no other.
