Summer is in full swing now which means it’s hot and humid. Not ideal for makeup. It’s going to sweat off just from walking outside or it will be washed away from water at the beach or pool. Some areas of the country average above 90 degrees in the summer, making it torture to try and fancy yourself up. Here are a few makeup tips and essential products to ensure that your makeup is summer-proof.
The number one must-have beauty item for the summertime is waterproof mascara. Mascara is every girl’s secret weapon. Apply some of your favorite waterproof mascara on a day at the lake, you’ll still look a little made up while water skiing or diving into the water. If you don’t have a waterproof mascara, check out your local drug store—most will carry mascara products in waterproof and non-waterproof formulas. While you’re there, make sure to grab a makeup remover for waterproof products.
A lightweight foundation is perfect for those days that you want to get a little fancier. You’re going to want a product with a little coverage, but at the same time something that’s light enough that you won’t be burdened by it. BB creams, tinted moisturizers, and foundations with lightweight formulas will all help you put your best foot—face—forward in the summer heat.
On hot, sweltering days, setting spray will save your life. Setting sprays lock in your makeup while helping you cool down and feel fresh. These sprays set everything in place and help prevent your makeup from melting off. Who wouldn’t want this hot item?
A good deodorant is so, so, so important for this humid heat of summer 2015. Ever heard the saying “a rose is a rose is a rose?” Well, don’t hold that true for deodorants—not all deodorants are the same quality. If your go-to deodorant isn’t cutting it for the summer, you may want to try out a clinical strength formula for some extra protection. Finding the right deodorant for your body is essential to staying fresh this summer.
So now that I gave you the essential items, what exactly are you supposed to do with them?
Makeup needs something to adhere to. Make sure you are layering your products to keep your makeup in place. To protect your skin from the sun, you’ll want to use an oil-free sunscreen as a base. After your sunscreen has dried, apply a primer—this will help to keep your makeup in place. Once that’s done, apply your makeup as you normally would.
If you typically only use a liquid foundation, try adding a light layer of a powder on top. The powder will help set the liquid foundation and will help your makeup’s lasting power. You can also skip the liquid foundation and just use a powder. Using powder as a foundation by itself will give you light coverage and will mattify your skin.
Instead of sticking with your typical powder blush, try using a cream blush for the summer. Cream blushes have more staying power. Powder blushes tend to fade more quickly and can streak when it comes in contact with moisture. Cream blushes can also double as a lip stain.
Waterproof eyeliner and mascara are ideal for summer. These products won’t fade during the long, hot days of summer. This combo has enough staying power to not streak or smudge if you go for a quick dip or splash around in the water all day.
