Summer Activities You’ll Want To Try With The Whole Family

Summer activities are difficult to do with the whole family. If your family is anything like mine, it is next to impossible to find something we all agree on to do. Even watching a movie is a three-hour process because we all have different tastes in what we like. There are a couple of things we can always agree on doing, though. That’s what this article is about: summer activities families will love to do together!

1. Camping

I have never been camping for real. I was supposed to go camping during a summer camp when I was in middle school, but the trip got canceled. My parents didn’t think we’d enjoy camping as kids, so we had camping trips in our backyard. We have woods surrounding our house, so our camping seems more legit that way.

Backyard camping is one of the best summer activities because it’s the same as real camping, only you’re still at home. You can have a fire in your backyard and roast marshmallows, perfect for s’mores. You can sleep in sleeping bags in a tent, even though you’re at your house. You can still look at the stars and explore the woods. It’s a fantastic activity to do in the summer that everyone will love to do.

2. Hiking

Hiking is something my family has always loved to do. We’ve seen some amazing sights around the state while hiking. It’s one of my favorite summer activities to do, and I think the rest of my family loves it, too. Hiking is one of those things that’s fun to do all year long, but you have better conditions during the summer.

This summer activity you can’t do at your house, though you can walk around the woods in your backyard. There are a lot of amazing sights when you go hiking, especially if you’re hiking up a mountain. The view once you make it to the top is definitely worth the hike. Hiking is also a fun way to get your daily exercise in, especially for people who don’t like exercising normally. Families will love this summertime activity.

3. Bird Watching

Bird watching is an activity you can do at your house. My family used to go bird watching all the time a few years ago. It is a great way to spend time together, especially when you can’t decide what to do. Bird watching is one of those summer activities that relax you while you look at the scenery around you.

You can also go bird watching while doing either of the two activities I’ve already mentioned. You’re already in nature when you’re hiking, so going bird watching will be easy to do. You’re also already in nature while backyard camping, so you can bird watch there, too. It also works for any animal, too, not just birds. You can watch for chipmunks or squirrels, as well as nocturnal animals you might find in your area.

4. Make a Kite

Kite flying is a really fun summer activity. I didn’t really like it until recently, like, during the quarantine recently. But I wish I made my own kite before then. It’s difficult to make one and keep it flying, especially when there are a lot of trees around you. I luckily live near a park, so we went there to fly the kite.

Once my family saw how much fun I was having with the kite, they all tried grabbing my kite from me to have a turn with it. It’s one of those summer activities that you wouldn’t think is that much fun while watching it, but it’s a lot of fun when you have a kite in your hands. I know my family never thought of flying a kite as something we could all do as a family, but now we’ll do it a lot more often.

5. Go to the Beach

This is an activity that people think of a lot. But have you ever had a beach at your house? My family likes the water, but we aren’t big fans of burning ourselves every time we go. So we decided to have a beach in our own backyard. We had a sandbox and we had a pool, so we combined both of them and made a beach.

You could still go to the beach and protect yourself from the sun. Going to the beach is one of the most common summer activities, especially if you live close enough to the water. My mother is always up for going to the beach. She would take my sister and me during February vacation every year, that’s how much she loved the beach. I still like having our own beach in the backyard better, though, just because you’re already home.

6. Go on Road Trips

Another thing my mom did with us during the summer was take us on road trips, or day trips as she called them. We’d leave the house at seven in the morning and spend the entire day in the city. We went to museums and we’d have lunch with my dad a lot. I also liked going on long road trips, too, but we didn’t do that a lot.

Road trips are a lot of fun. We used to drive to Hershey Park every year, which was a long trip for us. Being stuck in a car with five other people for nine hours was a long time. But we always had so much fun. We played license plate games, and we played bingo games. There’s so much you could do in the car on road trips, and you can see so much more driving than you can in a plane. This is one of my favorite summer activities.

I hope these summer activities will help your family agree on something. If you have other activities I didn’t mention, feel free to leave them in the comment section below. I look forward to trying new ones!
