Styling Your Room For Beginners

Having your own room can often feel like having your own castle, your own Bat Cave, your own island of seclusion. You want to make it look good, add your personal touch to it. However, how you go about doing that can sometimes feel overwhelming. You know what you like, but you don’t know how to reflect that in your room. Here are a few tips on ‘Styling Your Room For Beginners.’

1. IKEA

While some might not see IKEA as being the most fashionable of furniture stores, it serves as a good source of affordable, easy to construct furniture. They look decent enough on their own, but once you buy them you can use some creative techniques if you want to. Spray paint, markers, wood carving, heck, even stickers. It’s a basic move, but you’d be surprised how far it’ll get you in trying to style your room. Whenever you move into a new room, or you’re planning on taking a more proactive role in decoration for the first time, you should be aware of where the nearest IKEA is. Be aware, while the furniture is easy to assemble, it does often come in one big box. Use a tape measurer to measure the necessary dimensions of all doors, entryways, etc. so that you know what can and can’t fit in your room. You could always unpack things from the outside and carry them in, but speaking from experience, that isn’t nearly as fun as it sounds.

2. Hobby Lobby

Another store that every room stylist should know about. While most remember Hobby Lobby as the place their mothers would take them and spend for hours on end, the store serves as a source for a wide variety of arts and crafts supplies. Any form of hobby, craft and artistry that you might have can be supplied through this chain of stores. You can frame posters, buy decorating supplies, and learn quite a few new decorating hobbies. Sewing, scrapbooking; I once saw books there that would help one draw comics and Japanese manga.

3. Colors

Most people generally have a favorite color. Use that to style your room where color is applicable. Window dressing, bedding, rugs, even shelving. Coordinating your room in this way gives it a good splash of personality. Just make sure to consult color wheels to see what colors are good compliments to your favorite one. Also, be sure to not go overboard with applying pink or red or silver. Use the color too much, and you could very well blind yourself to your furniture, let alone your guests.

4. Theme

Quite a few people like to style their rooms centralized around a particular theme, such as the ocean, rock and roll or the cinema. This may be considered a dangerous move to make. Once you start down this path, the final result of trying to style your room around one idea may not be as coordinated as you might think. Or worse, it comes across as too extreme. The last thing you want your friends to see when they enter your room would be the singing sea bass hanging on your wall, or the death metal posters filled with screaming men in makeup covering an entire wall. Going back to the IKEA segment, a good idea to implement is to balance between your theme and IKEA furniture you plan on buying.

5. Cork-board

An item every person should have in their bedroom, no matter their age, should be a cork-board. They are an incredibly versatile and useful object to have. They can fit in naturally in a wide array of settings, and you can pin almost anything onto them and it would fit right in, such as calendars, post cards, reminders, and so on and so on. What you must have in mind is that you can’t overcrowd or drown your cork board items. You post on there has to have some ‘free space’ if you will.

While you’re in the process of styling your room, don’t be afraid to experiment. The good thing about styling your room is that you can undo a majority of the decisions you’ll make.
