A shout out to all of the travel-size ladies out there! ‘Though you be little, you are fierce!’ Being petite sounds like it should be adorable (and it is), but it also comes with some style and clothing challenges. We are here, just like your best fashion friend, for every petite beauty who could use some help navigating the trends of the season. Here are some tips for petite girls so you can be the ultimate petite style icon.
This may sound like a obvious, but petite clothes are not always available in stores and some brands do not even make petite clothing. It is totally unfair, and every petite girl has cried her share of tears over this, but we must be strong and smart if we’re going to be a fashion boss. Unfortunately, specialty-sized clothing like petites does come at a slight price increase, but the purchase will be worth it. You will be surprised at how chic and sophisticated you look when your clothes flatter your frame. Spend some time exploring some great petite brands that are out there, like Asos and Banana Republic.
When you understand that being petite is all about proportions, then dressing your body becomes easier. Good thing for us, the eyes can be tricked into thinking someone is taller or shorter. One way for a petite person to appear to have a longer frame(which can make you look thinner) is to invest in a great high-waisted pair of jeans. High waisted jeans cut the body at a higher point, making the legs look bigger. Finally those geometry classes came in handy—petite fashion is all about shapes!
When you want trick the eye into thinking you appear longer, you can dress in all one color. We all remember the fashion faux-pas of the past when it comes to dressing in monochrome; however, the tides of fashion have turned, and it is totally acceptable to rock a beautiful color from head to toe! So you have an event? No problem. Find a burgundy high-waisted pencil skirt and match it with a burgundy top. Have a wedding? No problem. Buy a beautiful, solid-colored dress and color-match it with a belt. And always wear shoes that match your skin tone. The same lengthening effect happens when your shoes and legs match.
I understand what it’s like to be a petite girl and have hips that are not photo-shopped. So trust me when I say that it is understandable to resist tucking things in. But I promise that when you rock your confidence, it will make your outfit even more amazing! Don’t be afraid to get in touch with your preppy self and tuck that button-down shirt in! When you tuck the shirt in, it breaks your body up into different parts, changing the way the proportions look. And we all know, it is about proportions! This is one of the best tips for petite girls!
At first, I resisted the cropped clothes—like “Where is the rest of the shirt?” But I’m older and wiser now; I realized that cropped clothes were my guiding lights to fashion Nirvana. My advice is to explore the cropped look. Stay open to the idea that less bulk could mean better fit. If you have a longer shirt that hits at the hips, then try putting a cropped jacket over it. If you have a high-waist skirt you can try to pair it with a cropped cardigan in the winter. In the case of the petite girl, less is truly more.
