Being in a couple can be really weird, especially when you get to the phase where you intentionally annoy each other. Although bothersome, there are lots of totally normal things couples do to annoy each other all the time. Pissing each other off is part of the fun of it, as long as plays are kept within bounds. Plus, relationships just wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t get the good, the bad, and the annoying! That being said, can’t they just stop sometimes?
Maybe you live together and this happens all the time, or maybe they just run up behind you and grab you while you’re walking to class. Even if it’s unintentional, and they just wanted to ask you a question while you were vacuuming, the presence of your sweetheart was so astronomically terrifying for a hot second. It’s especially annoying when you scare easy, or they find your reaction so entertaining and endearing that they jump out all the time (playfully!) just to check up on your reflexes. Thank you, my dear, for allowing me to feel my life flash before my eyes.
It was annoying when your sister did it, sometimes silly and sometimes annoying when your parents did it, and now your S.O. is up to bat. Tickling can be fun and playful, and maybe even sexy with your S.O., but it can also be so freaking annoying! When studying, eating, or trying to sleep, tickling is a straight shot to pissing your love off, even if they laugh. It’s annoying for the tickler, and the ticklee. My hat is off to those people who don’t get ticklish at all…
I’m not really sure why we all got into this, but from adorable to hilarious, we think it’s entertaining to snap pics of our partner while they’re sleeping. If they drool or make a funny face, that’s sleeping pic gold! While a little strange, it’s one of the really common things couples do to annoy each other. Although, in order for them to find out about the sleeping pics, you’ll have to be twice as annoying and post them somewhere. This one is both strange and normal, but that doesn’t mean we have to keep doing it.
We maintain our personal space so well with so many people, but our lovers, partners, and S.O.’s get a free pass somehow. We should be careful that we are setting boundaries for ourselves and for our significant others, and intent on making sure that they are respected, but a little bit of poking, prodding, ass-grabbing, and so on is also one of the very common things couples do to annoy each other. Sometimes it’s annoying, sometimes we like it, and that’s the fun of it. If we didn’t get them to cringe a little bit sometimes, would it still be love?
Calling names isn’t the same as the game of cute and silly nicknaming that couples do with each other. Honestly, it can be funny sometimes, but only when you kind of like the nickname they came up with. You get a lot of good fun out of nicknames, but you also get a lot of strange and annoying names as well. Personally, the longer the nickname, the more it annoys me! The point of nicknames is to shorten and sweeten! Still, someone once called me something along the lines of ‘my sweet sugarplum fairy princess’ and I was not about it. Don’t start with me now.
This is another kind of hide and seek that can get on your nerves. Maybe it’s not annoying that they want to borrow your things sometimes, and maybe you even find it endearing to find them wrapped up in something of yours when you see them. That being said, when you’re running around looking for that one shirt, or you come home after a long day and your cozy clothes are nowhere to be found, it can be very annoying. You’ll be exasperated while you’re looking, knowing that you put it in that one place, only to find out that it was never there because your sweetie spirited it away to use for themselves. Cute, or can they not? Depends how often it happens!
We all have that thing that we did that our partner witnessed, and now will never live down. Reminding each other about those moments is just one of the many things couples do to annoy each other. From misremembering or mispronouncing that thing, to peeing ourselves from laughter, to falling asleep under the table at a restaurant (true story from an anonymous source), there are so many things we maybe wish hadn’t happened. Still, our partner absolutely LOVES that they happened because they get a kick out of the story every time.
If it really bothers you, then have an honest conversation about it, and make sure you feel respected, but mostly it’s all in good fun. At the end of the day, we kind of have to admit that it was hilarious, too.
It’s a bit odd, but getting on our partners nerves by secretly licking their elbow or sticking a finger in their mouth while they yawn are just some of those strange and normal things that couples do to annoy each other. Reverting to our childhood playfulness is one of the joys of being in a couple, but not all the time, and not for everyone. The accomplishment of doing these things without your partner noticing is great though, and what would life be without that feeling of accomplishment! Also, they look so dang adorable when they’re annoyed, don’t they?
Does your partner ever do a really specific accent, impression, or other random gimmick that they think is super funny? Does it annoy you like nothing else? Have you told them yet? I was once dating someone who liked to talk in a baby voice sometimes and it drove me absolutely up the wall! For whatever reason, you cannot stand it, but they love doing it. Also, they kind of love that it annoys you because, you know, you’re cute as an annoyed person.
For those on the next level, or those who simply enjoy racking up points, making a game out of annoying each other is highly entertaining. Especially if you’ve been together for a little while, and you’re starting to run out of the baseline things couples do to annoy each other, you might try keeping score. Just make sure to set ground rules, like no playing during sex or when someone is upset, so that it really does stay a game.
A fun option to start with is ‘blip,’ where you pull down your partner’s bottom lip and release it to make a blip noise. Super fun, and a great way to get your partner’s eyebrows to cross in confusion that first time. You’re welcome, or, I’m sorry.
