10 Statement Pieces For a Modern Bohemian Dorm

A modern bohemian dorm is the perfect place to unwind after a long day of studying. College is the perfect time to experiment with styles you love to create an artistic bohemian dorm.  Creating a bohemian dorm can be simple and inexpensive. For a true one of a kind bohemian dorm, you can purchase handcrafted products or create your very own decor. This list consists of ten statement pieces used to construct your very own modern bohemian dorm.

1. A Hanging Shelf

Dorm rooms can be cramped with a limited amount of storage. A hanging shelf not only looks cool, but it adds extra storage in a creative way. A hanging shelf can help maximize a small space. Hanging shelves made from macrame give off a carefree attitude and add extra texture to a room. Bohemian dorms are all about texture. Hanging shelves can be bought in a variety of materials and types. There are even triangular metal hanging shelves. For an extra bohemian dorm, place succulents or other indoor plants on the shelf.  There are plenty of hanging shelves on Etsy. The one photographed is linked below the article. Hanging shelves range from $20 for simple shelves to about $100 and up for much more complex ones. If you’re feeling crafty, there is also the possibility of creating your own hanging shelf. I have listed a link at the bottom of the article with multiple tutorials of creating your own hanging shelves.

2. Ombre Curtains

Usually dorms are equipped with either boring blinds or plain gray purely functional dorms. An easy way to create a different aesthetic in your room is to change your curtains! There are many types of curtains you can add to your dorm to meet your decor needs. Sheer ombre fringe curtains can kick your room up a notch. But if sheer is not your thing, then there are blackout curtains. Blackout curtains can protect your precious sleep from being interrupted by the sun shining through your windows. Sheer curtains will add energetic natural light to your dorm room. There are curtains to fit any kind of vibe you want to create in your bohemian dorm. If you want then you can DIY your own ombre curtains.

3. Tapestry

A tapestry is a classic bohemian staple and a conversational piece. It is like a grownup version of your favorite posters from back in high school and it allows you to further express yourself.  Give it a modern update with muted colors such as this world map tapestry from Etsy. There are a variety of handmade tapestries on Etsy for any interests. There are even pop culture related tapestries.

5. Area Rug

An area rug not only creates a cozy feel, but it also ties a room together. A rug makes a dorm room look more mature and put together. Check out a multicolored one with an intricate pattern such as a southwestern, Persian, or paisley pattern. Simple colorful woven rugs also do the trick. and are fairly inexpensive. A rug will help warm linoleum or hardwood floors. It can also help protect the floor from being stained which is especially helpful during parties. Area rugs are everywhere from superstores to the internet. You can probably even find a suitable rug at an antique store or a flea market.

6. A Hammock or a Hanging Chair

Hammocks are peaceful. They are the perfect spot to read your favorite book or just to chill out. It’s also much more fun to hang in a hammock than a regular chair any day. There are handmade ones on Etsy. Hammocks are easier to find during the summer at brick and mortar stores. Besides hammocks, a hanging rattan chair is another stylish option. These types of chairs bring the calmness of vacation into your dorm.

7. A vintage lamp

A table lamp is an essential in a dorm, especially when two roommates have different sleep schedules. An overhead light can be too overbearing at times. A smaller light source on your desk is an essential to have in any dorm. A vintage lamp will look stylish when you’re burning the midnight oil. It also adds character to an otherwise boring item. Lanterns bring a unique charm to any room, especially ones that are patterned.

9. Dream Catcher

Dream catchers are popular right now and they look beautiful. A lot of stores carry dream catchers in their decor aisles and Etsy has some handcrafted ones with a personal flair.  You can even make your own dream catcher to hang in your room. There are traditional dream catchers and there are now lacy ones like the one pictured.

10. Indoor Plants

The bohemian vibe can be earthy and close to nature. Indoor houseplants such as succulents can help enhance the natural feeling. You don’t have to be a green thumb to find the perfect plant for your dorm room. Plants can also make your dorm feel more homely. There are so many different types of plants that it is easy to find the right one to suit your personality and the other decor in your room. For example, if you’re into a southwestern aesthetic then a cactus would fit right in with the rest of your room.

Designing your own bohemian dorm can be fun project. Just remember that there is no right or wrong when it comes to pulling off the bohemian look. The bohemian look in your dorm can be as eclectic or as simple as you want it do be. What are some of your favorite statement pieces that can be added to create the bohemian aesthetic?
