With winter coming to a close, so are the days of mittens, wool, and puffer jackets. In their place, we’re seeing silk scarves, the 80s’-inspired ensembles and lots of bright colors! Following the runway trends seen in Milan, Paris, London, and more, this spring is sure to see lots of retro-bold makeup looks. Want to rock a colorful winged eyeliner? Do it. How about a set of lash extensions? Excellent choice! Below, we’ve compiled a guide about how to rock these season’s makeup trends tastefully and confidently. Keep reading to see which spring 2020 makeup trends are in and are everything.
The first trend on our list is likely the easiest to try out for yourself (heck, as long as you’re drinking water and getting enough sleep, you’ll barely have to do anything for it). Dewy complexions are back in style, taking the place of layers of powder and mattifying concealer. Oily-skinned makeup lovers, rejoice! This spring, it’s completely acceptable to let your dermis breathe or just add a veil of light concealer (we’re partial to Neutrogena’s Skin Clearing Acne Complexion Perfector), some blush, lip color, and eye makeup and you’re ready to roll. That being said, if you’re a little overly oily (as in if you step into the sun you may start shimmering), there’s no shame in bringing along a few rice paper shine control sheets to keep your makeup looking fresh. We don’t know about you, but we’ll take the cash we would’ve spent on powder and instead go get a much-needed pedicure.
To someone who prefers a more natural look, Easter-egg colored eye makeup may seem a little off-putting. But when done right, this trend can be incredibly flattering on any eye shape or color! Take the example of Lily Collins below. She’s wearing a bright blue shadow across her eyelids, and the wings accentuate her almond-shaped eyes. She’s also either wearing false eyelashes or extensions. The combination of the shadow and lashes make for a striking, charming ensemble, so much so that little makeup besides the stuff on the eyes in unnecessary (Lily is only wearing a bit of foundation, blush, and subtle lip color). Try a pastel color on your eyelids: light blue for brown eyes, lavender for green eyes, and light pink for blue eyes.
To be fair, red lips are fashionable at nearly any time and anywhere. However, this spring is seeing a shift in red lipstick shades from cooler tones (such as burgundy, wine, and cranberry) into warmer tones (reds with a bit more orange to them, such as tomato red). If you’re a cool color loyalist, don’t panic! Going a bit warmer in makeup such as lipstick and blush is flattering on both warm and cool skin tones, as the orange-based shades translate to a pinker color once they warm up on the skin. Pair with some old Hollywood curls and get ready to turn some heads!
We’ve seen our fair share of slightly sparkly eyes within the past couple of years (thank you, Glossier), but metallic eyeliner has never been as popular as it is now. To try out the metallic look for yourself, first, decipher whether gold or silver flatters your features more (you could even try bronze if you think that’ll look nice with your eyes) and line the tops or bottoms of your eyes. The model below can successfully pull off a silvery shade on her lower lash line, as the coolness of the eyeliner accentuates the blue in her eyes and the placement of the liner is a good choice for her eye shape. Finding out what version of this trend will look best on you is a combination of common sense and trial and error, so head to your local Sephora to see what looks best on you!
Gone are the days of sifting through blush after blush, trying to find a shade that’ll work on you. Peachier shades work on nearly everyone, so you’re practically guaranteed to look great in a warmer blush that you purchased on Amazon. The beauty of a peachy blush is that it’s the perfect combination of pink and orange, making it a great choice to wake up those cheeks! For the best results, apply your product on the apples of your cheeks (the chubbiest parts, they show up best when you smile) and blend up to your cheekbones. Our favorite product is Burt’s Bees All Aglow Lip & Cheek Stain in the shade Blush Bay. It blends seamlessly into your skin and even when you think you’ve overdone it, all it takes is a few dabs with your fingers to give yourself a natural flush.
Long eyelashes are always in style, but this spring is favoring a more timeless look instead of a full set of clearly false lashes. The point of this makeup trend is to look natural and dramatic at the same time- you want people to notice your lashes, but not the fact that they’re artificial. To achieve this look, grab a simultaneously volumizing and lengthening mascara such as the L’oreal Paris Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Mascara (it even comes in a pretty gold tube). Wipe the excess mascara off your wand and onto a tissue before starting at the roots of your lashes and coating in a zig-zag motion to the ends. Repeat about five or six times, then do the same on the other eye. If you have a careful hand, you can add a little to your lower lashes, too. Not a fan of mascara? If your budget allows it, head to your local salon to get a classic (aka natural-looking) set of eyelash extensions to achieve the same look without getting makeup all over your pillow.
