Sorority Rush 101: Everything You Need To Know
Joining a sorority means joining a community, but there are a couple of factors you MUST know before rush. Before going sorority shopping, know your values and know exactly what you are looking for. Here is a simple guide onto finding the perfect sorority for you!
Do Your Homework
Before you go to rush, research your university’s list of sororities and do some research on all of them. Though this may feel lengthy, it is best to know exactly what you are getting into.
Also, try to talk to people around campus before going to rush. Ask about different sororities and their reputations. Remember, during rush, sororities are trying their best to give off a perfect impression, so you will not feel any negativity until later if that was not the right choice. Make sure to choose a sorority that has a good standing with the school or else your name will be in jeopardy throughout your college years.
Outline Your Values
When saying to know what you are looking for, there are many different factors that come into mind. Think about who you are as a person and what drives you the most in life. For example, if you are a pre-law student, there are tons of sororities that specify in pre-law and getting you to achieve your goals.
Along with this, a ton of sororities are culturally-based. For example, if you are Jewish and have grown up Jewish and will connect with that cultural part of you, you can join a Jewish-based sorority so you can continue in your journey within your culture.
Knowing what you believe in the most or what you want to do with your life is very important in finding a sorority. Trust me, you will definitely find a sorority that will match your values and match your personality. This is super important because you will need these connections within your sorority that ranges nationally for your future in your career.
Impressions
Your first impression of the sorority is extremely important. Do your personalities clash? What did and what did you not like? What charities do they work with the most? Is there a common pattern between all sorority members?
Think about every single detail of your first impression with each sorority because it will all matter in the long-run. Remember, sororities last a lifetime and most universities will not allow you to change your letters, so be careful in making a bad decision.
Focus on how the members treat one another and the charities that are based within the sororities. Also, ask about the specific events they have and their recruitment process. These details are super important because you are going to be involved in these events and you are going to have to see these members constantly for the rest of your life.
Know What NOT To Do
Although this may seem obvious, do not join a sorority because your friends are in it. This is the number one reason to not join a sorority. If your friends get along with others in this sorority, you probably will not and you will be jeopardized because of it. It will likely not match your personal values and it will take away from your character.
Along with this, do not join the first sorority you see. Try to look through every single one on campus and make a decision from there. Although it may be lengthy, it is definitely worth it in the long run.
