What Exactly Happens During Sorority Recruitment At USC
For all of the incoming freshman or sophomores who are dying to go through recruitment or are just doing it because all of their friends are, this is the list for you! Formal sorority recruitment can be such a fun thing, but also very draining. It can be hard if you don’t get invited back to the chapter you were dying to get in to. But as cliché as it sounds, everything really does happen for a reason. Trust the system. This is exactly what happens during sorority recruitment at USC!
Round 1
For incoming freshman, especially girls who know nothing about how sorority recruitment goes, round 1 can be a whole new scene. The first party you go to, on the first day of Round 1, will be very overwhelming. With the Pi Chi’s getting you hyped, things can seem to go by pretty quick.
But I can promise you one thing; the girls recruiting PNM’s are just as nervous as you are. They want to impress you and show you just how awesome their sisterhood is and why you should join it. This round is for the chapters to get a good feel of who you are. You won’t talk about anything too serious, just maybe how your summer went and what you are excited about this coming year. This round is only 20 minutes, so it’s barley enough time to make an impression on someone. My tip for Round 1: Make sure you look happy to be in every house and make sure you show each girl you talk to your real self and what makes you, you.
Round 2
Round 2 is the Philanthropy round, which means you will be learning about the different sororities philanthropy and what it means to them. This round is a very important for most PNM’s because it shows how each sorority is different and passionate about their service. It gives PNM’s a good feel about what the chapters stand for and why they do what they do.
I know when I was going through recruitment, the philanthropy round was a huge selling point for me. I saw how passionate the sororities were for their organizations and I wanted to be a part of something like that.
When they ask, you can mention a club you were in during high school or any volunteer work you have done. This round is 35 minutes. My tip for Round 2: Show the girls your soft side and what you are passionate about. Let them see you in a deeper way than they did before.
Round 3
Round 3 is the Sisterhood round where you will learn all about what sisterhood means to each person you talk to. Girls will come get you at the door, sit you down and most likely play a sisterhood video. The sisters will tell you about some of their favorite events they have been involved in. This round will let you see the sororities on a bigger scale and how their sisterhood has changed their lives. This round is 40 minutes. My tip for Round 3: Talk to the girls about what you like doing with your friends and what you are looking for in a sorority.
Preference
Pref round is the most serious round and you will only have 2 parties to go to on these days. You have definite potential to join one of the 2 chapters remaining. The girls in these chapters think that you can add something special to their sorority. During this round, there will most likely be a little “ceremony” and a couple songs that will be sung. Pref is special to each sorority because each of them do things differently.
This round will be the deciding factor for which sorority you want to join and be a part of. All 13 Chapters here at USC have something special and awesome to offer! There is no such thing as a “bad” sorority because like I said, they are all special and unique.
